IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans continued their march to Des Moines, with hopes of defending their Class 4A State Championship, by dismantling the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars 77-44 Tuesday night at home.
The Cougars led briefly, very briefly, at the start of the game by taking a 2-0 lead. After that, it was all West, all the time.
Myzeah Batie-Gaddy scored to tie on his way to an 18-point night. Wyatt Lohaus dropped-in a layup just ahead of the period-ending buzzer, giving the Trojans a 21-7 advantage.
Batie-Gaddy displayed some razzle-dazzle early in the second period as he pulled off a rim-hanging slam-dunk. Dondre Alexander scored back-to-back baskets and David DiLeo sank a 3-pointer while the Trojans held their guests to a mere 8 points for the quarter.
At the half, West was up 39-15.
The Trojan juggernaut continued its onslaught in the third quarter with Jeremy Morgan opening the half with 2 of his 6 points. Coach Steve Bergman rotated in his reserves including Justin Fleming, who sank a three-bomb. Kennedy, despite throwing everything possible at the Trojans, trailed 61-28 going into the final period. The reserves continued to rotate in as the Cougars had their best quarter of the night, tying West 16-16, but never making any form of threat to the Trojans.
Batie-Gaddy led West with 18 points while Lohaus had 17. DiLeo had a 7-point night while Alexander, Morgan and Chike Ukah each put in 6 points in a balanced offensive effort. Fleming added 5 points, as did Melvyn Chatmon. Other contributors were Jason Stewart with 3 points and Chad Rubin and Austin Swank with 2 each. Three-pointers came from Fleming, Lohaus, Batie-Gaddy and DiLeo.
The win moved the Trojans to 14-0 overall and 9-0 in the MVC in their 40th consecutive victory. West faces rival City High Tuesday, Feb. 5, at City before a Friday, Feb. 8, men/women double-header at home against Cedar Rapids Xavier.
