SOLON– Building blocks for big kids were discussed as the Solon Learning Academy’s site plan went before the Solon City Council.
The proposed childcare center will be located at the intersection of Prairie Rose Lane and Windflower Lane (east of Dairy Queen), and is slated to open in August.
The site plan passed unanimously at the council’s Jan. 16 meeting.
According to city administrator Cassandra Lippincott, the planning and zoning commission (P&Z) considered the site plan for Lot 105 of Fox Ridge Part 4 at a brief meeting and recommended approval. Commission members had questions about the facade and the parking lot, she said.
City engineer Dave Schechinger had provided comments which were all addressed, Lippincott said.
Kristen Kistler, the director of the new facility, and Emily Devereux, assistant director, were present for the meeting, as was the applicant, Ryan Wade of Wade Painting.
The 7,688 square-foot building will be situated on approximately one acre, with 44 parking spaces, according to plans prepared by Design Dynamics, Inc., of Cedar Rapids and MMS Consultants of Iowa City. Solon Learning Academy will employ as many as 13 full time staff in six classrooms, with a maximum capacity of 134 children, Kistler and Devereux said. Of that number, 100 will be age 5 and under, with the remainder enrolled in a Before and After School Program (BASP).
“We’re really excited to be coming to Solon,” Devereux said. She said signup for spots in the facility will begin in March, although over 30 kids are already on the list.
Council member Brad Kunkel queried about monitoring and safety, and was told that a security camera and a secure entrance would in be in place.
