Wesley “Wes” Allen Sovers, 65, of Solon, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City after a lengthy illness. Funeral mass was held Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon, with Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was held 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Full military rites were conducted by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Wes was born Sept. 16, 1943 in Tucson, Ariz., the son of Ralph and Marcella Tomas Sovers. He graduated from Solon High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He married Patricia “Pat” Irene Kaalberg on July 9, 1966 in West Liberty. Wes worked as a press operator at Moore Business Forms in Iowa City for many years and also helped on the family farm. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Solon American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose, the Solon Booster Club and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Wes enjoyed the time spent with his family and friends, rooting for the Hawks and directing chicken fries.
Wes is survived by his mother, Marcella Sovers of Solon; sons, John (Susan) of Muscatine, Mark of Solon, and Daniel (Michele) of Iowa City; a daughter, Tricia (Sean) Lokmer of Marion; two grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Sovers; and a granddog, Chief.
He was preceded in death by his father and his wife Pat on July 31, 1995.
