IOWA CITY– Nine straight losses to the Cowboys doesn’t sound right so the Hawkeyes, wrestling without two starters, won six matches and righted the wrong with a 20-13 win over the Cowboys.
I don’t know if head coach Tom Brands will be happy with four matches decided by less than three points but there is still time to improve.
I suppose you have to give Oklahoma State a little credit for keeping it close.
They used a smaller mat, which Mark Ironside (radio color man for Iowa) called a “junior high mat”.
The Cowboys did that so they could wrestle on the edge of the mat, try to keep it close and go out of bounds when the Hawks made a move.
Nice try, John Smith (head coach for the Cowboys), but it didn’t work.
Especially when you have guys like Brent Metcalf at 149 who had a tech fall, winning 23-6.
Phil Keddy also had a solid 12-7 decision and heavyweight Dan Erekson fought hard but lost, 8-5, to the number-one rated heavyweight.
Dan was down 8-3 in the third period but got a takedown to close the gap.
The Hawkeyes are 15-0 with29 straight wins…. I guess you can’t complain too much.
Iowa opens the Big Ten season hosting Wisconsin this Friday at Carver.
