Myrle M. Sondag, 89, of Iowa City, formerly of Keota, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Mercy Iowa City following a brief illness. Services were held Sunday, Jan. 18, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota by the Rev. Dennis Hopes. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, rural Sigourney. Visitation was held one hour before services at the funeral home.
Myrle was born Aug. 15, 1919, near South English, Iowa, to Frederick and Nelle (Price Harris) Knox. She grew up in the South English area and graduated from South English High School. On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Willard Frank Sondag in Sigourney. The couple made their home in Keota, where Myrle worked as a clerk in the variety store in Keota for 10 years. She also worked in housekeeping at Maplewood Manor for 14 years, retiring in 1986. Myrle, Edna and Pat Sanders shared a home in Iowa City since 2004. Myrle was a member of the VFW Auxiliary for several years, and the Birthday Club.
She is survived by a nephew, Ronald (Cecilia) Neis of Cedar Rapids; special friends, Edna and Pat Sanders of Iowa City and Tim (Diane) Sanders and family of North Liberty; and brother-in-law, Frank (Evelyn) Sondag of Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard, in 1974; and sister, Imo Neis, in 1976.
A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association.
