CORALVILLE– The West High Trojans posted their ninth shut-out victory of the season last Tuesday, May 10, as they hosted the Tigers of Cedar Falls High. West took care of the Tigers, 4-0.
“A ‘W’ is a ‘W,’” said Coach Brad Stiles, “especially now.” With the season winding down, his Trojans were looking ahead to upcoming battles (prior to this paper’s publication) against Waterloo East, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Xavier match-up would likely be for the MVC division championship.
Alex Troester nailed the first goal nine minutes into the first half. With six minutes left in the half, Tanner Schilling looked to be in position to score. However, at the last second he booted the ball to teammate Paris Martins, who kicked it in and wound up following the ball into the net.
Martins scored 12 minutes into the second half and nearly racked up a hat trick on an interesting fourth and final goal, which was credited to Schilling.
“Tanner placed the ball into me and I guess I did a little fake, and the goalie came with me,” Paris explained after the match. “I think it just kinda rolled into the goal.”
“I just like being nice to the little guy,” Schilling, a senior, said of his sophomore pal Martins and of setting him up to score. The duo felt targeted by the Tigers throughout the match, with Martins saying “they man-marked us.” However the Trojan bench proved deadly to the Tigers on multiple fronts.
“We’ve usually had one guy who could flat-out fly,” Coach Stiles said. “But now, we have two or three. We can stretch guys a little wider and let speed take over.”
West improved to 8-2 in the MVC and 10-4 overall. Cedar Falls dropped to 8-3 and 11-3-1.
