SOLON– Solon’s varsity baseball team is off to a 5-0 start.
The latest win came Monday, May 30, with a Memorial Day matchup against No. 4 Iowa City West (4A).
Solon downed the Trojans 6-2 behind a substantial scoring effort by senior Nick Day. Day belted two 2-run home runs and collected five RBIs on the day.
Brandon Shulista (2-0) struck out 11 batters and allowed only three hits, but one of them was a two-run shot that gave West the lead in the third inning.
Monday’s game featured retiring High School Principal Bob Lesan throwing out the first pitch against West High.
The Spartans took two against Benton Community Thursday (May 26), both by a 10-0 margin.
Nick Day picked up the win in the top half, allowing three hits while striking out five. Offensively, Tyler Smith was 2-3 for the Spartans with a home run. Ryan Butler also homered.
Jordan Siddell pitched five scoreless innings for the win in the second game. Marshall Koehn and Butler homered for the Spartans.
On May 23, Solon faced Muscatine in a doubleheader at home and swept the visiting team with big bats and solid pitching.
The top of the two-game showdown featured Shulista pitching a seven-inning complete game with eight strikeouts and only two earned runs.
Ryan Butler’s 2-run homer in the second inning put the Spartans ahead after trailing 3-2. The final score was 8-3.
Butler took the mound in the second game, giving up just one hit in six innings, Siddell pitched one inning in relief. Day and Derrick Loveless each hit RBI triples in the 9-0 win.
