IOWA CITY — The West High Trojans took the opener of a varsity baseball doubleheader Saturday at home against Dubuque Hempstead 8-6, but dropped the nightcap 3-0.
Hempstead started game one with a 3-0 first inning then was held scoreless until the top of the fifth when they scored three more. West picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Aaron Peller led with three hits and three RBIs, Ezra Reiners had a homerun and four RBIs, Spence Bonner had a pair of hits and Ryan Siems had one hit and one RBI. Luke Crimmins had a hit, Colin Baker and Leo Franz had two hits apiece. Kellen Yoder and Conner Schreck shared the mound with Yoder giving up nine hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings. Schreck struck out three in his 2 1/3 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Hempstead scored one run in each of the first three innings while handing the Trojans a goose egg. Franz had the solitary hit, a double. Jeremy Cronk took the loss while striking out five, giving up six hits and three runs, two of them earned.
West is in action Friday evening at home for a doubleheader against Cedar Rapids Xavier.
