IOWA CITY– Johnson County Empowerment is currently accepting applications for School Ready Scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year. The School Ready Scholarship program can assist parents in paying for a quality pre-kindergarten educational experience for their child.
Scholarships are available for 3, 4, or 5-year-old children who will be starting kindergarten during Fall 2012 or Fall 2013, with priority to children beginning kindergarten during Fall 2012. School Ready Scholarships may help fund quality preschool at the eligible early education program of the family’s choice. Applications will be accepted until August 1 and awarded based on priority. Applications received after August 1 will be considered on a first-received, first-considered basis. Eligible programs may include licensed child care centers, licensed preschools, or registered child development homes that meet a minimum set of quality standards. Families must meet income eligibility guidelines and reside in Johnson County. Families apply for the scholarships and funding is provided directly to the provider at their contracted rate.
Every child should begin school healthy and ready to learn. Many children benefit from quality early educational experiences in preparing them to succeed in kindergarten. Scientific evidence shows that early childhood education significantly improves the scholastic success and educational attainments of low-income children even into early adulthood. And children in high-quality child care demonstrate greater school readiness and success through second grade than children in low-quality care. But not every parent can afford quality early education. Johnson County Empowerment’s School Ready Scholarship Program may be able to help.
