One Community, One Book: All Johnson County Reads is a community-wide reading project that annually runs from the middle of September through the middle of November. The book is selected by a committee and is announced in the spring preceding the reading project. The book selected for 2011 is “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers. “Zeitoun” is the true story of one family caught between America’s two biggest policy disasters: the war on terror and the response to Hurricane Katrina. Zeitoun, of Syrian decent, and his wife Kathy have a painting business. When Katrina hits, Kathy and the four children evacuate to the home of relatives while Zeitoun remains in New Orleans to watch over the business. In the days following, he travels the city by canoe, feeding abandoned animals, delivering water and helping neighbors. Then, on Sept. 6, he is arrested by armed police officers. He is jailed for 23 days without contact with family or an attorney and eventually accused of being a terrorist.
A discussion of the book will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from10:30-11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room B of the Iowa City Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. The Solon Area Book Club will meet Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. and will be discussing this year’s selection. The book club welcomes adults who wish to join in for just one discussion as well as new memberships. The library will be borrowing extra copies for those who will be participating in this discussion.
