SOLON– The Stormin’ Pointers were no match for the Spartan defense.
Playing in the first round of the Class 3A postseason football tournament, Solon smothered Center Point-Urbana (CPU) 44-0 Wednesday to advance against a more formidable opponent, 8-2 Union of LaPorte City, Monday night (Oct. 31).
The Spartans limited CPU to just 39 yards of total offense, all of them on the ground. A lone Stormin’ Pointer completion went for no yardage. In fact, CPU quarterback Ryan Wilkin completed two more passes to Solon’s Andy Klouda.
The Spartans enjoyed a 23-0 halftime lead, but Solon left a lot of points on the field in the first two quarters. An interception stalled a Solon drive at CPU 11, a second quarter scoring opportunity ended with a missed field goal and the Spartans turned the ball over on downs at the CPU 22 as the half came to a close.
But with Solon’s defense, losing out on points was not a problem.
The Spartans came up with five takeaways, including a fumble recovery and return for a 12-yard touchdown by Paul Pisarik in the fourth quarter as the continuous clock wore on.
Solon was on the board first with a safety after Cody Fritz blocked a CPU punt out the back of the end zone for a 2-0 lead. Austin Dall scored on a 15-yard run and Cody Fritz rushed for two of his three scores to provide the 23-0 score at the break.
Fritz scored again in the third quarter and quarterback J. J. Hanus connected with Austin Holub for a 20-yard touchdown for a 37-0 lead.
Hanus ended the game 9-17 with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed three times for 20 yards. Fritz was the leading rusher with 14 carries for 74 yards; Austin Dall had three carries for 30 yards.
Colton Dall had five receptions for 49 yards while Holub had two catches for 55 yards.
Defensively, Jay Pike led in tackling with 11 total. Jake Morris, Nolan Asprey and Pisarik had fumble recoveries.
