NORTH LIBERTY– On Oct. 9, North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) members participated in the second annual Cedar Rapids Fire Department “Fire Bowl” charity flag football game held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. This year’s event was established to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. The event is hosted by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and this year’s event raised over $10,000 for the foundation.
According to NLFD Chief Eric Vandewater, the NLFD team also won this year’s Fire Bowl Championship. The NLFD team managed to battle its way to the championship game and defeat the Linn County Sheriff’s Department team, 8-6, taking home a trophy which will be on display at the station in the near future.
“I feel the members of the team deserve to be recognized,” said Vandewater, “so if you know any of them or have a chance to meet them, thank them for the volunteer services they provide to our community, and thank them for bringing home the Fire Bowl trophy.”
The members of the NLFD unite and support other alternative events outside their regular fire department responsibilities to better people’s lives. In the past the membership has worked with Relay for Life and the American Heart Association in an effort to better people’s lives in a proactive manner rather than responding in an emergency fashion.
