SOLON– One more little home stand and then it’s on the road for the Lady Spartans.
Solon’s girls will host Central DeWitt and Independence this week, then six of the next seven are on the opposition’s court.
The Lady Spartans walloped Maquoketa at home last Tuesday, 49-25, but let West Delaware slip by in a 50-42 loss Friday in Manchester.
Solon was held to a single point in third quarter at West Delaware after having a halftime lead.
“We were playing our game,” said Head Coach Mark Sovers, “but had a hard time making shots in the third quarter.” That kept the Lady Spartans from setting up their defense and that gave the edge to West Delaware. “There was not enough movement in our offense,” he continued. “We got back into it in the fourth quarter. I thought we did some very good things. We did a better job attacking the basket.”
Rylee Smith had 13 points and Mel Breza had 10 to pace Solon. Smith also had eight steals and five rebounds, both team highs. The Lady Spartans had 13 offensive rebounds on the night and 18 steals, but shot 2-20 from the three-point line. The team was 13-19 at the line.
That third quarter letdown interrupted a string of pretty good basketball for the Solon girls, Sovers said.
Against Anamosa and Maquoketa, the Lady Spartans had been able to pressure the ball and score off the fast break.
“Our defense set the tone for the whole game,” Sovers said of the 49-25 win against Maquoketa at home Tuesday, Jan. 10. “It was a speed that was faster than Maquoketa wanted to play.”
The Lady Spartans blew open a five-point lead in the third quarter and led 39-19 entering the fourth.
Smith had 10 points and three steals, while Breza added five points and six rebounds. No other stats were available.
Beginning with Saturday’s girls/boys doubleheader at Iowa City Regina, all but one of the Lady Spartans’ remaining games will be played on the road. After hosting DeWitt and Independence this week, the final home game will be Tuesday, Jan. 31, hosting Dyersville Beckman.
