SOLON– The Solon junior varsity (JV) girls’ basketball team recently finished its season with a record of 19 wins and two losses. The Lady Spartans were 13-1 in their division, and finished first in the WaMaC East for the second consecutive year. Solon went undefeated at home and put together a 13-game winning streak that spanned from early December to late January. Highlights included opening the season with an impressive 53-9 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg, scoring a season-high 62 points in a 34-point victory at Iowa City Regina, and winning an overtime thriller against Western Dubuque by tying the game on a three-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation, and going on to defeat the Bobcats in overtime, 43-40.
The JV team was comprised of five freshmen and eight sophomores, all who were playing in their first year of JV level basketball. Solon JV coach Brandon Fraseur credits each player’s preparation in practice for helping the team succeed on game night. “It took all 13 players to help us succeed this year. The girls believed in our team first philosophy, and worked hard each day to create a competitive environment in practice,” he said. “Their work ethic benefitted everyone on the team, not just our starters. When we had players out with injury or illness, we always had people ready to step in and contribute. They came to practice each day with a goal to get better, and it was rewarding to see their hard work pay off.”
