Saturday, April 14, will be the fifth annual “Dinner and Dance.” This event is hosted by the middle school choir and jazz bands. Buffet dinner begins at 4:45 p.m. in the middle school lunch room with entertainment provided by the show choirs. The dance begins at 7 p.m. in the gym with music provided by the two middle school jazz bands and the professional group “Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective.” Prices are as follows: ‘Dinner and Dance’ adult tickets $15 and student tickets $12, Under 5, Faculty and one guest, and performers are $8. Tickets may be purchased from any choir or jazz band member or by stopping in or calling the middle school office: 319-624-3401, ext. 1302.
Dance only adult tickets are $5 and student tickets $2 which may be purchased at the door.
Proceeds continue to support the middle school music department through Solon Spotlight.
Summer driver ed parent meeting
There will be a driver education parent meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9, in the middle school auditorium. This will be an opportunity for the driver education instructors to briefly explain the summer program and to answer questions you may have about the summer program. We understand that getting your child to and from both class and driving times can be challenging during the summer. With this in mind, they encourage you to talk with each other at the conclusion of this meeting to arrange transportation during the summer to and from class and driving times. The meeting will last no longer than 30 minutes.

Prom 2012: “The Roaring Twenties: An Elegant Affair” April 23
April 28 is the date for this year’s Prom. Prom tickets go on sale Monday, April 23, $6 for singles and $10 for couples. At the dance, prices will double to $12 for singles and $20 for couples. The grand march starts at 5:30 p.m. in the high school gym. If you want to participate, please arrive by 5:15 p.m. Prom pictures will be taken in the media center at the grand march between 5 and 7 p.m. Formal pictures will not be available at the dance. Dance will start at 9 p.m. and end at midnight at the South Slope Community Center located at 980 North Front St. in North Liberty. Formal dress is required. Hope to see you there
Solon Lakeview Elementary School will hold its kindergarten round-up for the 2012-2013 school year on Friday, April 13, from 8 until 11 a.m. and from noon until 3 p.m. Please contact the Lakeview Elementary office, 319-624-3401, ext. 1290 with your session preference. Children must be five years of age on or before Sept. 15, to attend kindergarten this fall. It is necessary for parents to bring their child’s birth certificate so school records will be official. If you live in the Solon School District and have a child who should be entering kindergarten, please contact Lakeview right away.
Reminder that on Apri13 there will be no school for this year’s kindergarten classes.
BASP will be holding registration for the summer 2012 program the week of April 16 through 20 at Lakeview. The materials will be located outside the BASP office. All forms and the registration fee must be returned within the given time frame to ensure entry into the program.

High school parent-teacher conferences
These conferences are being held on Thursday, April 26 from 4 until 7:30 p.m. in the teachers’ classrooms. Directions for online signup will be emailed to parents. You may also contact the office to schedule a conference.
Drop Everything and Read
SCSD media services will sponsor a “Drop Everything and Read” family reading night Monday, April 9, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Lakeview Elementary School Media Center. This celebration is open to all SCSD students, families, friends and neighbors. Just drop in to read.
Iowa vocal jazz championships
March 27 marked the 6th annual Iowa vocal jazz championships which were held at Wartburg College. Of the 11 ensembles selected from the state of Iowa, Solon was proud to have had two of those 11 groups chosen. “Blame it on Our Youth” made their second appearance at this prestigious event and finished seventh place in the state. Matt Moore and Olivia Ferguson were also chosen as outstanding musicians for their duet in the gospel tune “You Know Who You Are.” “5th Street Jazz” made their fifth consecutive appearance and finished in second place. Outstanding musician awards were given to Maja Black, Robbie Jedlicka, Melanie Breza, Kyle Stewart, Reagan Johnson and Wyatt Rath. Additionally, Reagan Johnson was chosen as the state’s outstanding female soloist. This marks the second time earning the award for Reagan.
All four of Solon’s jazz choirs as well as the two jazz bands can be heard at “Jazz at the Dome” on May 6 beginning at 5 p.m. Hope to see you there.
