NORTH LIBERTY– It’s time to fire up the grills, tune up the guitars and put on your blues shoes. The sixth annual North Liberty Blues & BBQ festival is on for Saturday, May 26, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Rain date of Sunday, May 27).
Named Attraction of the Year for 2011 by the Iowa City Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the festival has gained popularity as a family-friendly, laid-back and all-good venue that showcases Iowa’s best in blues. This year’s lineup includes Blues & BBQ return favorites Kevin “BF” Burt and the Instigators and the Ernie Peniston Band, to be joined by first-time guests, Electric Kool-Aid Trio and the Bryce Janey Group.
New this year, the Blues & BBQ stage welcomes two youth-based bands to fill the spaces in between headlining performances. The North Central Jr. High school band will perform a few blues numbers, as will students from North Liberty’s Music4Life program.
As always, the air will be sizzling with delicious barbecue and other fare from local venues. New this year, an artists’ alley will give local visual artists an opportunity to display and sell their work. Also new to the beverage garden will be the addition of craft microbrews brought to you by Red’s Alehouse.
Another exciting addition is the kids’ Musical Playground, an area where children can make and take their own musical instruments, fashioned from recyclable materials like boxes, cans and tubes. As always, all kids’ activities– face painting, inflatable rides, visits with the North Liberty firefighters, games and crafts– are free and open to everyone. There’s even a hydration station for your pooch. Fireworks at 9:45 finish the festivities with a bang.
Bring your lawn chairs, sunglasses and good-time attitude and help us celebrate the great food, art and music our community has to offer. For more information, visit the website at www.northlibertyiowa.org/bluesandbbq .
It’s one day. One party. One cool time.
