SOLON– The Lady Spartan soccer team expanded its record to 3-0 with home wins last week over Independence and West Liberty. “The team has really begun to jell and is working very well together for such a short amount of time together,” said head coach John Tucker.
On Tuesday, April 10, Solon redeemed a loss last season to Independence with a 1-0 win. A very early goal by Alison McKinnie was the only scoring allowed in the game. Solon’s defense put in a rock solid performance. Independence was never allowed the opportunity to get a good shot off due to the hard work and tenacity of the Solon defensive line, led by Katherine Carr. The Solon midfield showed unwavering strength in controlling play to set up the offensive drives.
Later in the week, the game against West Liberty gave the offense more of an opportunity for shooting practice. The tempo of the game was determined at the opening kickoff when Alison McKinnie took the ball straight down through the defense and scored with only 34 seconds off the clock. Offensive scoring was well rounded with Ali Herdliska, Anna Seydel, Jackie Meyer and Brianna Pike adding single goals on to McKinnie’s six goals.
The Lady Spartans ran away with the 10-0 win.
The Solon girls’ soccer junior varsity team has had a good start to its season with wins over Williamsburg and West Liberty and a loss to Independence.
