SOLON– Formal plans for Solon’s streetscape project will be unveiled during a public hearing May 2.
The downtown renovation project would include the resurfacing of Main Street from Highway 1 to Iowa Street, as well as the installation of curb and gutter, new sidewalks and ornate lighting.
At last week’s April 18 meeting, city council members set the May 2 date for the public hearing and received a project update from city engineer Dave Schechinger.
The week before, Schechinger said, he and members of the city’s informal streetscape committee had met to discuss design issues and a schedule for getting the project out of the gate.
Subsequent to the formal hearing, he said, the city would receive bids by May 22 and look to make a decision on a contractor at a special meeting Wednesday, May 30.
Construction would begin in early June, with substantial completion by the end of October, although Schechinger said the city might consider extending the deadline in hopes of receiving a lower bid.
There will be two alternate bids for the project– one extending an extra block west to West Street, and the other to extend 50 feet on the east side of Highway 1.
City administrator Cassandra Lippincott has indicated the city intends to meet with owners of affected businesses in small groups prior to construction to discuss the impact.
