Just a reminder, school will be out for the summer on May 29, but the library will not be on summer hours until June 1. Summer library hours are from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, closed on Sunday.
Summer Reading Program kicks off Thursday, May 31, at library
The Summer Reading Program Kick-off Party is, Thursday, May 31, from 5 until 6:30 p.m., co-sponsored by Hills Bank & Trust of Mt. Vernon. “Dream Big. . . READ!” is the theme this year. All Summer Reading Programs are free.
Pick up your reading logs and T-shirt challenge activity sheets at the party and hear about the great prizes and programs that the staff has ready. (Reading logs will not be available until the night of the kick-off party). Enjoy the refreshments provided by our sponsors.
Daytime activities will include Pajama Storytime for preschool and kindergarteners while Afternoon Adventures will be offered to first through fourth graders. Pick up a brochure or visit the library website, www.solon.lib.ia.us , for specific times and programs.
Every Tuesday evening will be family night with movies or special guests including The MacBride Raptor Center who will be bringing several birds, The Grout Museum with a “Bubble Bonanza” and Musician/Storyteller Mike Anderson playing a variety of musical instruments including the nose harp.
Participation in the Summer Reading Program can begin at any time. Anyone unable to attend the kick-off party may pick up reading logs and activity sheets at the circulation desk. Everyone is welcome whether it is for a week or two or the entire summer. All reading logs and all T-shirt challenge sheets must be turned in by July 28. Grand prize winners will be notified on Monday, July 30.
Teen Summer Reading Program Kick-off Party June 2
A special Kick-Off Party for grade 5 and above will be held on Saturday, June 2, from 6 until 8 p.m. featuring the movie, “Holes” (PG) and snacks. There are also special summer reading programs and activities for grades 5 and up.
Teen programs are “Teens on Tuesdays @ 2” and last about 45 minutes. June 5 is “America’s Next Top Monster.” Create and parade the monster of your dreams to win a prize. June 12 is a scavenger hunt. June 19 is a special “Hunger Games” themed event and June 26 is “Bat World” with Vera Blevins where you will learn all about bats– up close and personal.
Tuesday Family Nights
Mark 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday evening on your summer calendar for family entertainment at the library. On Tuesday, June 5, the Pixar movie classic, “Monster, Inc.” will be showing in the meeting room. Snacks and drinks will be provided. All Tuesday Family Night activities are free and open to all families. Bring a pillow or blanket for floor seating during family night movies.
Display window emphasizes summer reading activities
Now under construction in the display window is “Night Owl”, dedicated to the MacBride Raptor Center and displayed in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program general theme, “Night”. Toni Russo, window display coordinator, is creating a night woodland scene under the full moon complete with a great horned owl on loan from the Army Corp of Engineers. Stop and take a look. The owl’s eyes will be watching you.
Garage sale maps available
Maps will be available on the website beginning May 31, at the library on Friday, June 1, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. for the Solon city-wide garage sales sponsored by Friends of the Solon Library. At press deadline, there are over 50 sales registered with many more anticipated.
City-wide garage sales will be held on Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. until noon with many sales having extended hours; beginning on Friday or continuing into the afternoon on Saturday, and some open on Sunday.
June book club/span>
The next meeting of the Solon Area Book Club will be Tuesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Members will be reading mysteries of their choice and sharing their impressions with the group. Check out a book by your favorite mystery writer and come and share it with fellow readers.
