SOLON– Two school records and a season of first and second place finishes marked the 2012 season for Solon’s eighth grade girls track team. Solon’s seventh graders nearly matched those team finishes– and have their sights set on middle school records in 2013.
The eighth graders won the WaMaC conference east division crown, as well as meets at West Liberty, DeWitt and Regina. They were second at Williamsburg, Dyersville and Mount Vernon invitationals. In the Iowa Association of Track Coaches State Meet, Solon was eighth overall in the combined Class 3A-4A competition; with the second best point total among 3A entries.
Sidney Lawson was a part of both school records, lowering the 100 meter hurdle mark to 16.67; erasing her 2011 best of 17.72, set as a seventh grader. Lawson teamed with Audrey Lester, Lindsey Reicks and Nicole Oberthien in the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay (1:13.33), cracking the mark set by Molly Walkner, Kaitlin Hatcher, Katie Folkerts and Kari Vance (1:13.78) in 2011.
State meet place winners including Katie Misel, second in the shot put (29’, 0-1/2), Courtney Joens, third in the high jump (4’11) and fourth in the discus (78’8), Lester, Reicks, Lawson and Olivia Erenberger, fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:15.88) and Lawson, third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.19).
