NORTH LIBERTY– This spring, the City of North Liberty broke ground on a new 40-acre community park on the west side of town near North Bend Elementary School. The park has an address — 1565 St. Andrews Dr. — and will be the home of North Liberty Blues & BBQ in 2014 and other community events for years to come. But it still doesn’t have a name.
The city is now seeking suggestions for naming the park. The public can submit names at northlibertyiowa.org/namethatpark until June 15. City staff members will sort through the suggestions and present five to 10 to the North Liberty Parks and Recreation Board during its July meeting. The board will send three finalists to the city council who will select the park’s new, official name.
The name will be chosen based on four criteria:
• Relevance to the community: The park will be the largest park in North Liberty and, as such, the name needs to express that this is a park for the entire community, not a single neighborhood.
• Timelessness: As North Liberty continues to grow on the west side of Highway 965, the park’s name needs to continue to feel current.
• Native connection: Whatever name is chosen, it should feel native to the area as a whole and the site in particular.
• Uniqueness: The name should be unique to this park and avoid getting lost in a sea of names on a map.
