The last early out activity for 2013 will be a movie on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. The animated movie “Planes” is rated PG.
Parents or caregivers are responsible for getting students to the library and picking them up when the movie is over. School age children under the age of 10 may attend the early out programs without an adult but must be picked up at the conclusion of the program if they are not in the care of a babysitter, who must be at least 11 years old.
The Friends of the Solon Library will have tables of gift-quality books, holiday decor, and other giftable items at the library in December. As items are purchased, more items will be put out for sale. Items will continue to be on sale during the library’s regular hours through Dec. 21, while they last. Those of you who ordered Xmas jar mixes can pick them up beginning Dec. 14.
The holiday display window, designed by Toni Russo, will feature the children’s classic “Peter and the Wolf,” composed by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The window will feature a very special guest, on loan from the University of Iowa’s Natural History Museum. This will be a great window for young and old to enjoy.
Twelve trees were entered by individuals and group designers in the Friends of the Library’s contest. Each tree is decorated in a unique theme and is 4 feet or less in height. Stop in and see the trees soon. Silent auction sheets are available for you to bid on a tree to take home. Bidding ends at noon on Dec. 14, but each tree also has a “Buy It Now” price you can buy the tree for that price and not have to wait out the auction. These trees are ideal for apartment dwellers or senior citizens with limited space. There are a variety of themes this year– if you have both Cyclone and Hawkeye fans in your house, maybe “A Tree Divided” is for you. The popular “Hunger Games” and “Harry Potter” are combined in a tree and there are also trees featuring themes of cats, dinosaurs, gardening, nature, Hot Wheels, Monopoly, and Dr. Seuss.
Each time you visit the Solon library through Dec. 20, register for the drawing sponsored by Friends of the Solon Library. Last year’s drawing for the 52” plush puppy was so popular, the Friends of the Library decided to do it again. This year’s prize is a 53” plush panda bear. What a great surprise for your child or grandchild– or yourself. Drawing for the prizes will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 21 and the winner will be notified by phone.
The friends used book cart in the hallway is always full of great reads, but be sure to check it out now with a great special collection of books with holiday and winter themes.
