CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy had little trouble last Thursday (April 17) with the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks, beating the bluebirds 4-1 in varsity action on the field below Kingston Stadium.
Anna Hausler, a senior, put West on the scoreboard with nearly 10 minutes left in the first half when she scored with an assist from fellow senior Eleni Katz. Two minutes into the second half freshman Emma Cooper launched a shot at the J-Hawk goal that came up just a bit short. However, a Jefferson player inadvertently finished the job for an own goal, and a 2-0 West High lead.
Halfway through the period, Cooper launched another attack off an assist from Heelah Nadler. This time the shot went in without further assistance, and the Women of Troy were up 3-0. Katz put in the fourth goal 12 minutes from the end as she rounded the right corner and rocketed it in. Molly Lipman, a junior, was credited with the assist.
The J-Hawks finally penetrated the West High defense with 6:19 remaining.
The win moved West to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Coach David Rosenthal was pleased not only with the team’s performance in the contest, but also with how they’ve progressed thus far in the season.
“We’re continuing to work on the timing on our runs and getting comfortable with different players in different positions, and they’re starting to develop that, which is good,” Rosenthal said. “They’re starting to come together more and more.” Against Jefferson, Rosenthal said he felt his team became stronger and stronger as the match progressed, “which is what we want to do, not only in this game, but throughout the season.”
With five seniors on the squad: Beth Crow, Katz, Meredith Arpey, Alli Peterson and Hausler, Rosenthal has some experience back in his lineup this season. “We also have some freshmen (Regan Steigleder, Lexi Shaffer and Cooper) that are really coming on, and they’re impact players.”
The ladies travel to Cedar Falls on Thursday, April 24, for a varsity/junior varsity (JV) pair against the Tigers at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex, and then return home on Tuesday, April 29, to entertain Cedar Rapids Xavier. The JV squad kicks-off the evening at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow under the lights at 7 p.m.
