$1k raised in North Liberty by Iowa Human Alliance

Layla, a 4-year-old mini Austrailian Shepherd mix, gets a beauty treatment at an Iowa Human Alliance (IHA) dog wash fundraiser Saturday, July 16, at Leash On Life in North Liberty. She was one of 36 dogs to receive washes. IHA also completed 10 microchippings and several nail trimmings. Over $1,000 was raised, which will help IHA perform subsidized spaying and neutering. Sixth Iowa bicycle fatality this year

Coe professor dies after Hwy. 965 collision

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man has died after being struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle along Highway 965 early Tuesday morning.
According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, Devin Disterhoft, 27, of Tiffin, was driving a 2008 GMC Sierra in the northbound lane of Hwy. 965 near the Meadow Road NE intersection when his vehicle struck a bicycle around 6:30 a.m. on July 19.
The cyclist, Daniel Lehn, 58, was transported by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he later passed due to his injuries.

Big plans for Cedar River Crossing

Preserving a piece of history while improving the future

SUTLIFF— More changes are coming to Sutliff. The small settlement, in the extreme northeastern corner of Johnson County, was thrust into the spotlight in 2008 after record flooding heavily damaged the historic Sutliff Bridge. While the bridge was rebuilt in 2012, that project did not mark the end of preservation efforts in the area also known as “Cedar River Crossing” or “McLellan’s Landing.”

Solon’s one run holds up in district baseball final

Ira deals two-hit shutout to Mount Vernon

SOLON– They were two Cool Hand Lukes.
But Solon’s Luke Ira got the better of Mount Vernon’s Luke Eldred and the Spartans advanced to a substate baseball final July 20 against Fairfield.
Ira threw a two-hit shutout and a single first-inning run held up as the Spartans upset the Mustangs, 1-0, Monday, July 18, in Solon.

Senior Advocates heading to Sally’s on Broadway July 21

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates’ next Restaurant Road Trip is to Sally’s on Broadway in Springville on Thursday, July 21, leaving from Terrace Lane Glen at 4 p.m. The Advocates will also be celebrating Doris Divoky’s birthday. Bluebird house building Aug. 9 at Lake Macbride Main Lodge

SOLON– The public is invited to join Lake Macbride seasonal staff in building bluebird houses. The event on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Lake Macbride Park’s Main Lodge, is open to people of all ages.

Solon High School Dance Team can drive Friday, Aug. 5

SOLON– The Solon High School Varsity Dance Team will have its annual can drive on Friday, Aug. 5, in the Solon High School parking lot, from 4-7 p.m. Donations of empty cans, bottles and plastics will be accepted. The team will return them to the Can Shed as a fundraiser for competition fees. Pop tabs will be removed and donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Construction to start on Hwy. 1/Main Street signalization project

SOLON– Within a month, the intersection of Highway 1 and Main Street will likely be fully signalized.
According to City Engineer Dave Schechinger, construction of the traffic signals was expected to begin after Beef Days and be completed some time in August.
Schechinger reported on the status of the project at a July 6 meeting of the Solon City Council, noting a pre-construction meeting had been held with contractor Advanced Electric Service.
Advanced submitted the lowest of six bids for the project– $98,430– and was awarded the project at a March 2 meeting.
