Defense smothers Mustangs

SOLON– The Solon defense did everything it needed to do.
The Spartans held the Mount Vernon Mustangs to just over 100 yards of offense and forced two turnovers in a 42-6 victory Friday night.
The win puts Solon at 4-1 on the year; the Mustangs dropped to 1-4.
On a night when Solon quarterback J. J. Hanus completed only two of his 12 pass attempts, the Spartans ended up grinding it out with 407 rushing yards.
Hanus accounted for 153 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries.
But it was the defense that got things going early for Solon.

Lady Spartans move up to No. 4

SOLON– Solon’s varsity volleyball team escaped No. 12 Central DeWitt on the road and moved up another notch in the rankings last week.
“DeWitt did a good job of taking us out of our game, but the girls showed enough maturity to end up winning in four,” noted Head Coach Kurt Trout. “Our defense, led by Rylee Smith, did a great job picking up the offense on an off night.”
Solon captured the first two games narrowly, 26-24 and 25-23, but DeWitt took the third game by another narrow score, 23-25. The Lady Spartans rallied in the fourth game, by another close score, 25-20.

Home, sweet home: three firsts and a second for Solon XC

SOLON– Heading into mid-season, Solon’s girls cross country teams collected team titles in varsity girls and both junior varsity divisions and runner-up for the varsity boys, in the Spartans’ only home meet of the season Sept. 20 at the Solon Nature and Recreation Area.
The girls rolled to a 23 point total in the seven-team meet, undercutting Williamsburg (52), Northeast-Goose Lake (92), Mount Vernon (103), Clear Creek-Amana (105), Central Clinton-DeWitt (171) and Wilton (190). North Cedar and Tipton ran partial squads.

Dance team coupon collection

Help the dance team support our overseas troops! The Solon High School Dance Team is collecting manufacturer’s coupons for U.S. Naval base in Atsugi, Japan, again this year. Thanks to the Solon community, last year the team mailed over $6,000 in coupons.  Please help the dance team continue this great cause.  Drop off your coupons to Mrs. Lane at the middle school or high school. If you have questions, please call 624-3401 ext. 1116.

Our Lord’s Fall Festival

SOLON– It’s a one-stop shop that supports the community.
Our Lord’s Church in Solon will host its seventh annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
A major fundraiser for the service-oriented congregation, the Fall Festival centers around a soup luncheon and bake sale, with craft items, a raffle for a hand-stitched quilt and a pie-baking contest thrown in for good measure.
The church, established in 2004, uses funds to support its many community service projects, according to co-chair Marge Knepp.

Walk as if life depends on it

NORTH LIBERTY– When Bill Nash went to the doctor to have his arm checked out, the last thing he expected was to begin a life-changing battle with cancer. But when doctors told him he had lymphoma, they quickly removed a lymph node tumor in his armpit, and started him on a series of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
“Your head spins. You’re getting poked and prodded. You’re at the mercy of the doctors,” Bill said. He said it happened so fast, there wasn’t time to think about what to do or how to pay for it.

CCA has changing of the guard

OXFORD— The Board of Directors of the Clear Creek Amana school district underwent a major change as four out-going members were replaced with four incoming. Tim Hennes, Betsy Momany, Kathi Huebner and Kevin Kinney all declined to run for re-election in the Sept. 13, school board election, opening the door for Terry Davis, Rick Hergert, Steve Swenka and Bob Broghammer.
“I wouldn’t give it up for anything,” Hennes, the out-going board president, said of his eight years on the board.
