Penn Street Overlay District may get overhaul

NORTH LIBERTY– A proposed change to zoning requirements for development along North Liberty’s Penn Street won’t have to wait through three readings for approval.
Therefore, one developer with plans to expand his business there can move forward with his project.
The North Liberty City Council was asked to approve changes to the Penn Street Overlay District section of the code last Tuesday, Sept. 24, and to condense all three readings into one.

A plea for paving

TIFFIN– The Bella Sala (which translates to “beautiful room”) reception and banquet facility opened on Jasper Avenue in Tiffin in 2010 and has since become a popular venue for weddings, fundraisers and corporate events. Bella Sala owners Melissa Fontanini and Lyndsie Schnoor brought two not-so-beautiful issues to the Tiffin City Council at its Wednesday, Sept. 26, council meeting.
Citing a misunderstanding, Fontanini reminded the council of the history of Bella Sala’s two-year tax abatement.

Fesler makes bid for supervisory seat

By Lori Lindner

JOHNSON COUNTY– Dave Fesler doesn’t present himself as a belonging to any politician’s club.
He doesn’t offer pat answers, doesn’t ask to go off record– at least, not during the interview for this newspaper– and he doesn’t have a campaign manager. He expects to get elected not with the backing of an established party and its accompanying resources, but through good, old-fashioned neighborhood canvassing.

CEDAR RAPIDS– When the Eastern Iowa Orchid Society (EIOS) hosts its first-ever show this weekend, there will be a lot of locals behind the scenes.
Nile Dusdieker of North Liberty will be judging, Jon Lorence of Solon is show chair and James Quaintance of rural Solon is a member and national award-winner.

2012 ‘See You at the Pole’ in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Heritage Christian School students participated in the national “See You at the Pole” event Tuesday Sept. 25, the day before thousands of other students from around the country will gather to pray around their schools’ flagpoles. As one would expect at a Christian school, students at Heritage have heavily participated in the national event in past years. Christian students who attend the area’s public junior highs, however, have sometimes been reluctant to participate because of fear of being singled out or intimidated by the lack of numbers around their flagpoles.

By Chris Umscheid

TIFFIN– The 2012 Homecoming for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers was tarnished Friday night as visiting Central DeWitt had its way with the guys in blue, winning 30-14 and dropping CCA to a 3-3 record overall.
