Clipper softball off to a 2-0 start

OXFORD — The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball team started their 2011 campaign with a pair of wins last week, dispatching Mid-Prairie 12-4 Wednesday in Wellman, and pounding Maquoketa 8-1 at home on Thursday evening.

CCA, West boys soccer earn State appearance

JOHNSON COUNTY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ soccer team battled in the rain last Saturday (May 28) for the right to make their first State Tournament appearance. The Clippers shut-out Keokuk 3-0 at home. The win earned CCA an appearance Thursday, June 2 in the state playoffs against Cedar Rapids Xavier at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines. A win would move CCA to the semifinal round on Friday, with the Class 2A championship scheduled for Saturday. Match times are 2:30 p.m.

CCA boys 4x400 squad wins at State Track meet in Des Moines

DES MOINES — Dillon Villhauer, Caleb Sedlacek, Zach Manders and Jared Ganschow took their successful 4x400-meter relay on the road to the 2011 State Co-Ed Track and Field Meet, and came home as state champions. The foursome ran the event in 3:21.77.
Jared Ganschow brought home a pair of second place medals for his 48.60 seconds finish in the 400-meter dash, and his 22.43 seconds effort in the 200-meter dash. Ganschow also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.52 seconds.
Zach Manders was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20 seconds.

West girls are diamond ready

IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy are set to defend their 2010 MVC Conference Championship on the varsity softball diamond. The ladies posted a 32-10 record overall and 24-2 in the MVC last year. Coach Jeff Kelley looks for even better results this year.
“Because we were so young last year, I look for improvement from all of our returning starters offensively and defensively.”

Nine seniors lead the way for 2011 West baseball

IOWA CITY — Coach Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans have been the State Class 4A Runner-Up team for two years in a row. With nine seniors on the 2011 squad, the smart money would look for West to be back in Des Moines again this year.
The Trojans lost Sean Moore, Neil Madsen, Colton Rogers, David Rachke, Neil Flynn, Ryan Raaf, Chris Lauer and Tom Heinrich to graduation, but a core of veteran starters remains.

West girls tennis to State

IOWA CITY — The 2011 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Singles and Doubles Regional Tennis Tournament was held at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex on Thursday, May 19. Class 1A and 2A competition was held with the champion and runner-up advancing to the State Tournament, which will be held Thursday and Friday, June 2 and 3. The State Tournament will also be at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex.
In singles action West High’s Addy Riley won the championship with teammate Olivia Lofgren the runner-up.

Optimists Club releases June calendar of activities

NORTH LIBERTY– The Optimist Club of North Liberty May and June calendar is as follows:
May 26: Regular Thursday Dinner Meeting, 6:30 p.m., Pizza Ranch. Speaker: Natalie Wilkerson will present Tender Care Apparel.
May 29: Blues & BBQ Festivities. Optimist food trailer will be positioned to serve beginning at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers needed.
June 9-12: Fun Days. Parade on Friday, June 10, and the food trailer in operation during the weekend. Volunteers needed.
June 13: Board Meeting, 6:30 p.m., Bill and Darlene Smith’s home.

Kent Park beach to open May 28

OXFORD– The F.W. Kent Park Beach will open for the season on Saturday, May 28. Daily hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Park officials remind the public that no lifeguards are provided; swim at your own risk, swim only at the designated beach. No alcohol is allowed on beach. Cans, bottles and food items are not permitted in the beach area.

Food For Thought

It’s long been said that necessity is the mother of invention. I don’t know who said it first, possibly Benjamin Franklin– it’s the sort of thing he is given credit for, but I can only guess since I’ve misplaced my book of famous quotations. I suspect that all those famous pronouncements weren’t exactly original to Franklin in the first place. It’s more likely that he decided to write down all the wise and apt pronouncements he heard from other people and put them in Poor Richard’s Almanac, thus getting credit for them.
