Legion spaghetti supper fundraiser Sept. 19

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper on Wednesday, Sept. 19, serving from 4:30 until 7 p.m., at the Legion hall.
The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children, and children under five eat free.
The all-you-can-eat meal includes spaghetti, homemade sauce, French bread, green toss salad, assorted dressings, homemade desserts, milk and lemonade.
Proceeds are for merit awards for Solon 2013 graduating seniors.

mj’s invites you in

SOLON– Mary Jane Meyers chose the name of her new shop on Main Street purposefully.
mj’s bo chic– a carefully blended moniker reflecting the mix of casual and tailored, classic and trendy, Park Avenue-couture-meets-Soho spirit within. Even the shop’s ambiance– a fresh, newly-remodeled space in a turn-of-the-century building with tin ceilings and vintage accents– is a tribute to the timelessness of good taste.

NL’s Boseneiler to head JC veterans commission

JOHNSON COUNTY– The Johnson County Veterans’ Affairs Commission has a new, full-time leader.
For the time being, anyway.
At least one Johnson County supervisor is hesitant to bring another full-time employee aboard, equating a salary increase to a tax increase for Johnson County taxpayers.

Apartment buildings approved for Fox Ridge

SOLON– Solon will soon have something it’s been lacking.
A site plan for two new 12-plex apartment buildings in the Fox Ridge subdivision was approved by the Solon City Council last week.
To be located on Lot 106 of Fox Ridge Part Four, the two three-story structures would be accompanied by three eight-unit garage buildings along Prairie Rose Lane on the south end of Solon.
The site plan had been unanimously recommended for approval by the Solon Planning and Zoning Commission at an Aug. 28 meeting.

Preschooler programs

Even the youngest can enjoy the library programs. Babygarten is taking place on Fridays from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. through Oct. 12. This program is specific to children from newborn through 24 months and their caregivers and siblings. The program includes approximately 20 to 25 minutes of rhymes and songs followed by 30 minutes of play time. This program is specifically designed for one-on-one involvement between parent and child and is facilitated by Miss Jen, children services librarian.

Pantry serving over 20 area families

SOLON– The Solon Community Pantry is serving 23 families, helping to supplement the weekly food budget for over 65 people. Each week the pantry’s numbers continue to grow with the addition of new families. The community is donating generously, plus the pantry receives weekly deliveries of Table to Table items. In order to maintain a strong inventory of staple goods, the pantry is eligible to receive inventory from the HACAP (Hawkeye Area Community Action Program) Food Reservoir located in Hiawatha and also to collect cereal products from Pepsico in Cedar Rapids.

Solon Community Pantry wish list

SOLON– The Solon Food Pantry served 24 families in the last two weeks and that reduced the pantry’s inventory. The current wish list includes: juices, cereal, canned meats, tuna helper, canned fruit, instant potatoes, pasta sides, ravioli/Spaghettios.

American Legion Bingo day Sept. 30 to benefit Solon Habitat home

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a Bingo day on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1 until 4:30 p.m. at the Legion hall.
Community members are invited to come and play. Pay by the game, 50¢ a card, variety of prizes/cash. The Bingo day is a fundraiser for Solon Habitat for Humanity.

The group will meet to discuss the upcoming facilities needs for the months of October, November and December at the Solon Middle School and Lakeview Elementary gyms.  Please make sure your team or group has a representative present and bring your schedule.
