May 4th

NLPD joins the CIT movement

Two officers to attend training in May

NORTH LIBERTY– Add the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) to the list of law enforcement agencies in Johnson County buying in to the concept of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT).
The Memphis, Tenn., Police Department pioneered the concept in the late 1980s as a way to better deal with people having a mental health issue such as hallucinations, schizophrenic episodes or paranoia. In the early 2000s, the police department in San Antonio, TX, expanded on what became known as “The Memphis Model” by training every officer in a 40-hour CIT program.

Former Hawkeye basketball player to open youth gym in Tiffin

TIFFIN– When Darryl Moore came to the University of Iowa in 1993 little did he know he would not only get a chance to walk on the basketball team, but he would earn a scholarship, become a two-year starter and earn the Chris Street award, an award that exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and intensity of Chris, a former Hawkeye basketball player who died in a car wreck on Jan. 19, 1993.
Now Moore, who has been in medical sales for over a dozen years, is seeking to open a gym in Tiffin to work with kids on developing basketball and life skills.

A path to the future

CCA committee to determine long-term facilities needs

TIFFIN– Continued enrollment growth in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district will necessitate additional school buildings in the future. However, how soon and where they will be located is yet to be determined. With a forthcoming comprehensive facilities plan, the district hopes to be proactive rather than reactive as needs arise.

Red’s lands additional parking space

By Shianne Fisher
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– The unsightly patch of dirt frequented by Red’s Alehouse customers will soon be getting a concrete makeover.
An agreement between Red’s and the City of North Liberty, approved at an April 26 council meeting, will allow the restaurant owners to construct a new parking lot on the adjacent city property with an entrance through Red’s existing parking lot.
“I think everybody understands the situation here,” said City Administrator Ryan Heiar. “Red’s is located in an area where there are challenges with parking.”

Spartans on The Blue Oval for Drake Relays

DES MOINES– A sure sign of spring in Iowa is a weekend of rain for the Drake Relays.
Rain fell on all three days of major activity on The Blue Oval at Drake University for the 107th edition of America’s Athletic Classic. However, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of 4,485 high school, college and elite class performers on and around the track, including 17 Olympic medalists, gearing up for the 2016 Rio Games in 10 weeks.
