148 seniors graduate from Clear Creek Amana

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– The valedictorian speeches were littered with references to shared childhood experiences (Harry Potter, Disney Channel, Netflix) on Sunday, June 4, at Clear Creek Amana’s graduation ceremony in the packed high school gymnasium.
“We’ve all found our P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney,” said Grace Murray, referencing the Disney movie “Finding Nemo.”
A total 148 seniors made up the graduating Class of 2017, with 10 valedictorians and one salutatorian.

ISU solar car to make a pit stop in Oxford

Clear Creek Amana graduate helps build “Penumbra”

AMES– Bryan Kalkhoff is home for the summer, but still reminiscing on the hours spent helping to build a solar car this past school year.
“I wanted a way to really reinforce what I was learning in class,” said Kalkhoff, a recent Clear Creek Amana graduate. “School can only teach you so much.”
The North Liberty resident jumped at the opportunity to join PrISUm his freshman year at Iowa State University. The student-led solar car team has been in business since 1989, having developed 12 award-winning vehicles in its journey to change the paradigm of transportation.

Tiffin named “fastest growing city” in Iowa

State Data Center cites 54.4 percent growth since 2010

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– A population growth of 176 new residents per year may not seem like much, but it was enough to land the City of Tiffin the title of “fastest growing city in Iowa” last year.
According to estimates by the State Data Center of Iowa, Tiffin grew from 1,947 people in 2010 to 3,006 in 2016. That’s a 54.4 percent increase– a few percentage points above runner-up Bondurant in Central Iowa, which grew by 50.2 percent.
Why Tiffin? City Administrator Doug Boldt said the city just happens to be in one of Iowa’s main hubs.

Off to a good start

Solon reloads for 8-2 mark early in season

SOLON– We’ve heard it before.
“It will be difficult to replace the three seniors we lost from last year’s team,” Solon head softball coach Jim White said. “Defensively, Nichole Oberthien was a serious difference-maker for us, and Syd (Lawson) and Monika (Bevans) were two of the best offensive players in the state of Iowa.”
The Lady Spartans ended last season deep into the state tournament, denied a chance at the 3A title, they still rebounded to defeat No. 11 Boy-Hull/Rock Valley, 6-3, in the third-place game. Solon, ranked No. 3, finished the year 34-10.

SOLON– Solon’s varsity baseball squad has rattled off five straight wins to move to 8-4 on the season.

West Delaware came into the doubleheader sporting only two losses, but Solon’s starting pitching limited the Hawks to only eight hits across both games. Meanwhile, the offense was cranking out 20 runs on 21 hits.

IC Regina hands girls 2-0 loss

Playoffs end with regional Class 1A home semifinal

SOLON– It was a tough break for Solon’s varsity girls.
Leading scorer Josie Durr was injured in the first half of the next-to-last soccer match of the regular season, and while the Lady Spartans rebounded for a 10-0 win against Northeast Goose Lake in the opening round of the postseason, the magic could not be recaptured against Iowa City Regina.
Regina ended Solon’s season with a 2-0 win in a Class 1A regional semifinal in Solon June 2.
