Election early voting/absentee ballots available now

IOWA CITY– Early voting is now available for all Johnson County cities for the City General Election to be held Nov. 3 at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.

City adopts new sex offender restrictions

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has adopted recent state-imposed restrictions on sex offenders.
At the Sept. 8, 2009, meeting, the North Liberty City Council unanimously approved a resolution stating anyone who has been convicted of a sex offense against a minor will not be allowed into the North Liberty Community Library without written permission of the Library Board of Trustees, nor will they be allowed to loiter within 300 ft. of the library grounds.

Clippers cruise to a homecoming win

TIFFIN — It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, but at the end of the night, they were celebrating a 31-7 Homecoming victory over the Demons from Washington in the seventh week of the season.
The Demons showed early they would be a force to be reckoned with, halting the first Clipper drive after nine plays and 37 yards. The Clippers quickly shut down the Washington offense, however, only allowing 8 yards on four plays and taking over possession on the Washington 32-yard line.

New technology and a relaxing environment for dental patients

NORTH LIBERTY — Fear of the dentist and dental visits is a common experience. Dr. Nichole Miller would like to make it a thing of the past.
“It’s very rewarding when I can change someone’s attitude about coming to the dentist,” she said.
Dr. Miller, DDS has been a dentist for 11 years and opened her own practice, Ridgeway Dental, in December 2008. A West Branch native, Dr. Miller attended Iowa State University for her undergrad education in pre med. She graduated from the University of Iowa’s School of Dentistry in 1998.

CCA Band raffling tickets to NFL game

TIFFIN– Here is an opportunity to see an NFL football game and support the CCA Band all at one time. The Clear Creek Amana High School Band is raffling off four tickets to an NFL football game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos. The game will take place on Dec. 13, 2009, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Methodist church to hold 3 hours of service Oct. 17

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty First United Methodist Church will be hosting the 3 Hours to Make A Difference service project on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. -4 p.m. Work teams from the First United Methodist Church will be fanning out all over North Liberty performing community service in three hour shifts. Service projects will include yard work, winter weatherization of homes, small construction jobs, and many other projects at no cost, to improve the lives of the North Liberty community.

Scouting for food bags will appear Oct. 17

NORTH LIBERTY– On Saturday, Oct. 17, the members of North Liberty Cub Scout Pack 216 will distribute bags for canned and other non-perishable goods to be donated for the annual Scouting for Food program. Collection of these bags will be on the following Saturday morning, October 24. The goods received help the North Liberty Food Pantry and offer the scouts the opportunity to provide a vital community service. The scouts have had excellent success in the past with this event and look forward to another great year. Please have your bag out 9:00 am on the 24th.

NL Development to host a business get-together Oct. 20

NORTH LIBERTY – In an effort to foster the city’s growing business community, North Liberty Development, a not-for-profit group of business owners and advocates, is hosting a business mixer. The event will take place over breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 7:30-9 a.m., at Ms. Susan’s Catering and Reception Hall, 1215 Jordan St. in North Liberty.
At the event, local business people and city leaders will have the opportunity to mingle, network and meet one-on-one in a relaxed setting. The group asks that attendees consider a small monetary donation to help defray the event’s costs.

Local man launches online auction of comic book art to raise money for cancer cause

NORTH LIBERTY– Next month, dozens of superheroines will unite in the fight against cancer, thanks to one North Liberty resident.
When Jason Gavin learned in December, 2008, that his sister had breast cancer, and then learned of his mother’s diagnosis of breast cancer just two months later, it was a lot for one family to handle.
“At first, I couldn’t believe it. It was a big, strange shock. The whole mortality thing kind of hits you,” said Jason. “I wanted to do something to help.”
