THE SOLON LIBRARY is accepting applications for the part-time position of “library page”. This position is offered at 10 hrs./wk. @/$8.00 per hr. Primarily responsible for shelving materials. Some evenings, experience preferred. Comfortable working with the public, basic computer skills a plus. Abandon your dress pants with Jeans-4-JA

NORTH LIBERTY–In celebration of National Junior Achievement Week, declared by President Eisenhower in 1955, Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, Inc. is holding their fourth annual Jeans-4-JA event. During the week of Feb. 2–6, employees of participating companies are encouraged to wear jeans or casual attire to work by making a donation to Junior Achievement. Each participating company can determine the cost of wearing jeans (i.e. $5/day or $20/week), with all of the proceeds going to support Junior Achievement programs in Eastern Iowa.


NL Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby this Friday

NORTH LIBERTY–The two North Liberty Cub Scout packs will be holding their annual Pinewood Derby race Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gerdin Conference Room at the North Liberty Community Center. 
The Pinewood Derby is a fun and exciting event where Scouts craft a car from a pine block, decorate the block, add wheels and send it flying down a track to achieve the best possible time.  The fastest cars in Pack 216 (Penn Elementary) and Pack 275 (Van Allen Elementary) will be recognized, as will the pack with the fastest average times. 


MercyCare physician holds parent-child workshop

NORTH LIBERTY– On Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, MercyCare North Liberty family practice physician, Sarah von Harz, M.D., is presenting a workshop that will provide parents and caregivers creative ways to communicate so the children they care for will listen. The workshop will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at MercyCare North Liberty, 1765 Lininger Lane.


CCA Kindergarten Round-up

OXFORD– All parents in the Clear Creek Amana School District who have children who will be five years old on or before Sept. 15, 2009 and are planning on sending their children to school in the fall are asked to call the elementary school their child will be attending.
If you reside in Iowa County, please call 622-3255. Students who will be attending the Amana Elementary in Middle Amana, will be attending Kindergarten Round-up on Tuesday, March 31.
If you reside in Johnson County, please call 828-4505 (Clear Creek Elementary) or 626-3950 (North Bend Elementary).


Fourth-sixth grade dance

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Knights baseball team is sponsoring a dance for fourth through sixth graders on Fri., Jan. 16, from 6-9 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Recreation Center. Admission is $5. Concessions will be available. Music by a live DJ. All kids from fourth through sixth grade are welcome to attend.


AlphaGraphics to host grand opening

NORTH LIBERTY– AlphaGraphics in North Liberty will celebrate the grand opening of their new business at 720 Pacha Parkway #1 with an open house reception on Jan. 15, 2009 from 2 – 7 p.m. The event will include refreshments, door prizes, and two grand prize drawings for an iPod Classic and a $500.00 direct mail marketing campaign. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.


Hawkeye women visit the University Hospital

One of the fun parts of covering the Iowa Hawkeyes is visiting the University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital with the women’s basketball team.
Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder does a great job of getting her team involved in the community.
Last summer they spent at least one day helping sandbag when the Flood of 2008 hit and destroyed so much property on campus, in Iowa City and Coralville.
The sandbags were heavy and it was pretty messy work, but the players and the coaches pitched in and enjoyed helping out.


Hawk hoops struggle

Last Thursday was another challenging night for Hawkeye fans. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams played at the same time.
The men were at home playing Minnesota while the women were on the road playing Purdue.
The men’s game was on ESPN2, the Women’s on the Big Ten Network and the BCS championship, Florida-Oklahoma, was on Fox.
I didn’t want to watch both Iowa games at the same time so I watched the men live and taped the women’s game.
They both lost so that was not a fun night, plus I was rooting for Bob Stoops and Oklahoma and they lost.
The women split.


Gasoline and guillotines

Gasoline has been in the news again this week.
First experts are warning that the price will shoot up again because it’s so low now that companies will stop investing in exploration and development. When it comes to prices, it seems with the oil industry what goes down goes up; when it comes to profit what goes up goes up farther.
