Hawk women win battle

IOWA CITY– To say the Iowa win last week against South Dakota State, 82-69, at Carver was a knock-down, bang-up game might be an understatement.
Morgan Johnson went down with a shoulder injury. Kamille Wahlin suffered a deep thigh bruise and Theairra Taylor was lying on the floor with a banged-up left knee.
Morgan and Kamille were back in later while Theairra will have her left knee checked out. The 5-11 freshman tore her right ACL her senior year in high school and has been wearing a knee brace.
The bad news is Theairra will be out for the season.


Hawkeyes stepped it up

IOWA CITY– The Hawkeyes stepped up with the absence of Anthony Tucker and won their second game in a row last week, knocking off South Carolina State 82-69.
It’s kind of like what Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz talks about, which is the “next man in” principle.
Anthony was Iowa’s second leading scorer so some of the other Hawkeyes needed to step up and make plays.


Food for Thought

There are a few changes I'd really like to see in the new year. I'm not talking about New Year's resolutions. I learned a long time ago that I'm no good at keeping them and, by mid-February, I find myself riddled with guilt and self-recrimination. I am, however, really good at thinking up things that OTHER people ought to do to make the world a better place. Because it's winter and I have lately succumbed to the temptation to dabble in the couch-potato lifestyle, I have been watching more television than I have at any other time in my life.


Walkin

We drove to the Chicago area to visit my parents the weekend before Christmas.
Mom and Dad, ages 83 and 85 respectively, are doing well.
Mom is “deaf in one ear and can’t hear out the other” as Dad puts it, but with the help of hearing aids she can still listen to television and hold a conversation. Every once in a while she’ll say something that makes you wonder if she understands what is being talked about, but for the most part she keeps up.
She also gets around.

Local basketball program a slam-dunk

NORTH LIBERTY– When players in the Prime Time basketball league take the gym floor at the North Liberty Community Recreation Center, fans see splendid athletes, well-versed in ball handling and shooting, putting up impressive shots and making remarkable plays.
They may not see the years of hard work behind it all.
Two of the league’s better-known players, Duez Henderson and Jason Price, have made the hard work their business.


A bump in the road: CCA road and trail project stalls over misinterpretation

OXFORD — Shawn Lueth and Jon Fitch of Shive-Hattery presented a preliminary proposal for throughways at the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Tiffin campus during the regular monthly meeting on Dec. 16.
However, it was neither what Board President Tim Hennes wanted, nor had expected.


Court decision does not further annexation resolution for Coralville, North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– The state’s City Development Board, in its regular meeting Wednesday, Dec. 16, considered the latest ruling in the competing Coralville and North Liberty annexation proposals, now disputed for over three years.
And it doesn’t look as if a resolution will be forthcoming soon.


H1N1 vaccine providers open eligibility

IOWA CITY– As of Monday, Dec. 14, the Iowa Department of Public Health opened eligibility for 2009 H1N1 vaccinations to all persons and not just those in the priority groups. While everyone is now eligible and all are encouraged to get a 2009 H1N1 vaccination, Johnson County Public Health officials stress the importance of those in the priority groups to get vaccinated. A third wave of the H1N1 pandemic is expected and those persons most vulnerable to severe complications due to influenza need to be protected.


Leonard Dale Krotz

Leonard Dale Krotz, 80, of Solon, died on Dec. 15, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City of a sudden illness. Funeral mass was held on Friday, Dec. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there was a 6:30 p.m. vigil. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.


Mary Elizabeth McNamara Soukup

In this season of Advent holding her rosary and prayer shawl, Mary Elizabeth McNamara Soukup, 92, entered eternal life on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, surrounded by the love of her family and friends in her home. Funeral mass was Saturday, Dec. 19, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus and the Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation was Friday, Dec. 18, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services and before the service on Saturday.
