Vivian Mae (Hanson) Peterson, 93, of Harlingen, Texas was born in Salem, S.D. and died on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Windmill Manor nursing home in Coralville.
She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Whitticar; her son-in-law Elliott Whitticar; her grandson Jeff Hughes; her granddaughter-in–law Lori Christensen; her great grandson Owen Hughes; her grandson Russ Hughes and his partner Lauren Stark; and her former son-in-law Jim Hughes and his partner Carol Roland. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three siblings.

Robert W. Osweiler, 83, of North English, formerly of South English and Webster, died on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a long illness.
Visitation with a prayer service was held July 19 at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, North English. The funeral service was held July 20 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, North English. Interment was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Sheila K. (Burns) Kavanaugh, 60, of Westbrook, Maine, formerly of Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, died of metastatic breast cancer of the liver on July 21, 2009, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, Maine. Services were held Monday, at the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Memorial services and burial will be held in August at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. Arrangements by Jones Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home in Portland, Maine.

I saw a program explaining the over-abundance of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere: what causes it, what it does to the environment, and what can – or might – be done about it. If you passed your junior high science classes you should remember that as we breathe in air and absorb the oxygen from it, we exhale carbon dioxide. We also produce carbon dioxide when we use fossil fuels to produce electricity, run our vehicles and operate our factories. Plants, very cooperatively, absorb carbon dioxide from the air and respire oxygen.

IOWA CITY — The airspace over the Johnson County Landfill is usually busy with scavenging birds. On July 12, the birds had to share the air with dozens of colorful radio controlled (RC) airplanes.
The Iowa City Aerohawks opened their flying field – located near the Johnson County Landfill – to the public for their 17th annual air show.
