NL man arrested on robbery charges

NORTH LIBERTY– Hills Bank was the scene of yet another bank robbery in North Liberty last week, but police officers arrived in time to capture suspect James Frank Miller of North Liberty.


Croco resigns seat on CCA board

OXFORD — A bombshell was dropped July 15 at the regular monthly meeting of the Clear Creek Amana School (CCA) Board. Board member Matthew Croco stunned the board when he announced at the end of the meeting that this would be his last.
Croco, whose director District 4 seat was up for re-election this fall, told the board his family was moving outside the CCA district in the near future. District 4 includes North Liberty and Coralville.
“Thank you for a good two years,” he said to his fellow board members.


Plots for parks and future facilities

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council approved two significant land purchases last week.
At their regular meeting on July 14, the council unanimously agreed to buy two plots of land, but both will be reserved for the city’s future use.
An area of between 36 and 41 acres, located off St. Andrews Dr. on the west side of Jones Blvd., will be purchased for $19,900 per acre, City Administrator Ryan Heiar told the council. The exact number of acres will be determined after a final land survey is completed.


Hooverfest honors military service Aug. 1

WEST BRANCH—Hooverfest, the annual celebration of Herbert Hoover’s birth, takes place on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, just east of Iowa City at exit 254 off I-80.


Bickford Senior Living hosts dementia care workshop Friday, July 24

IOWA CITY– A workshop hosted by Bickford Senior Living, located at 3500 Lower West Branch Rd., will offer tools to enhance care to dementia sufferers at the end of life. AARP Driver Safety Program on Wed., Aug. 5

IOWA CITY—Is it time to tune up your driving skills? Attend the AARP Driver Safety Program on Wednesday, Aug. 5 sponsored by the Hills Bank Friends Club. This classroom refresher course, which is open to everyone, will teach defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, and rules of the road. Especially designed for drivers age 50 and over, you’ll find out how to adjust your driving to normal, age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. There are no tests, and course completion may even entitle you to an insurance discount.

NL Jaycees host blood drive Saturday, July 25

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Jaycees blood drive will be held Saturday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center, 520 W. Cherry St., in the Gerdin Conference Center.


Jean Campbell Kupka

Jean Campbell Kupka, 90, of Iowa City passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Jean was formerly the Ticket Manager at the Iowa Athletic Department.


Carol Ann Huberty

Carol Ann Huberty, 72, of Dyersville, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque from complications of diabetes.
Funeral services were held Friday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial at the church cemetery. Rev. Phil Kruse officiated.
Carol was born May 22, 1937, in Petersburg, the daughter of Clem and Thecia (Gerken) Bruggeman. She married Thomas R. Huberty on July 9, 1955 in Dyersville. Carol retired in 1989 as a supervisor at Modernfold in Dyersville.
