Habitat Tree entry forms

Entry sheets and rules for the Habitat for Humanity Seventh Annual Tree Decorating Contest may be picked up at the circulation desk until Nov. 12. Decorated trees need to be at the library with the $5 entry fee paid by Nov. 15. The contest is open to all individuals, families, clubs and businesses in the community.


Visit the lobby book cart

Halloween tales and spooky stories are now available on the Friends book cart in the library’s entry area. Suggested donations for books range from 25-75 cents and there is always a wide variety of selections to choose from for adults and children.  Check it out each time you visit!

A new thriller by Swedish author Lars Kepler has been added to the collection but is usually checked out and not on the shelf. “The Hypnotist” is impossible to put down. Placed in Sweden, a gruesome triple-homicide gathers the attention of Detective Inspector Joona Linna. The killer is still on the loose, and there’s only one surviving witness– the boy whose family was killed in front of him. Whoever committed the crimes wanted this boy to die; the victim of more than 100 knife wounds, he has lapsed into a state of shock. Desperate for information, Linna sees only one option: hypnotism.


Solon Parks and Recreation youth basketball league now accepting registrations

SOLON– Registration for the Solon Parks and Recreation girls’ youth basketball league is now open. The program will run Nov. 5-Dec. 17 and will be offered to grades third through sixth. Registration forms can be found online at www.solon-iowa.com or at the Solon City Office. Registration runs through Oct. 14. Games will be played on Saturday mornings in Solon, Mt. Vernon or Lisbon.


New public works building completed

SOLON– “The new shop is completed,” Solon Public Works Director Scott Kleppe reported to members of the city council last week. “Thank you very much for your support.”
Kleppe has moved his office and the city’s fleet across the street from its old location into a new 64-by-45 foot Energy Panel Structures (EPS) post frame building.
The new Solon Public Works building features three front bays and a side bay, and something the old shop was lacking– a floor drain.


Connecting with kindness and kolaches

ELY– Anyone can postmark a card, send flowers and maybe even pay a short visit to friends who are under the weather or feeling blue.
But to bake a batch of kolaches? Now, that’s a heartfelt sentiment.
When Ely Presbyterian Church elder Lacey Stockdale was searching for new ways to reach out to the community, she and church member Joanne Chadima landed on a time-honored, generations-old tradition.


SHS students learn history first-hand at POW/MIA event

SOLON– Imagine living for six weeks, only eating one handful of field corn per day. Ted Sprouse doesn’t have to imagine it.
He lived it.
Sprouse was serving the US Army in Korea in 1950 when the Chinese swarmed the American and UN lines. He was wounded and captured, wearing a summer-issue uniform as winter set in. For six weeks, a daily handful of corn, his only ration, sustained him.
“We survived that,” he told students at the Solon High School.


Solon American Legion Riders all-you-can-eat breakfast Oct. 16

SOLON– The American Legion Riders, Stinocher Post 460, Solon, will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Solon American Legion.
The menu includes eggs (scrambled or cooked to order), pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage links, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, milk and coffee. The cost is $7 for adults, $4 kids (6-12), and kids under six eat free.


Solon High School’s “My Fair Lady” Nov. 10-13

SOLON– Solon High School will present the acclaimed Broadway musical “My Fair Lady” Nov. 10-13 in the Solon Community School District Auditorium.  Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
This year, the program will offer reserved seating.  Ticket prices are $6, $9 and $12 depending on the seat location; all levels may be reserved in advance of the show. Reserved tickets may be purchased in the high school commons on one of the following dates:
• Oct. 29: 8-10 a.m.
• Nov. 1, 3 and 8: 5-7 p.m.
• Nov. 9: 4-6 p.m.
