Veterans Day Program Nov. 11 at middle school

SOLON– The annual Veterans Day Program will be held at the Solon Middle School Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 11, starting at 1 p.m. All veterans and their families and friends are invited. Community members are also welcome. The program will include several speakers and the eighth grade band. Refreshments will be served. Please join us in honoring and recognizing our veterans on this important holiday.


Legion Turkey Supper Nov. 5

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a Turkey Supper on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 5-7:30 p.m. The menu includes turkey and dressing, real mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, rye bread, homemade dessert, coffee and milk. The cost at the door is $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Advance tickets may be purchased at the Solon American Legion Hall or Solon Hardware for $8 and $4. As always, children five and under eat free.


Countywide Veterans Day service Nov. 6

SWISHER– The Johnson County American Legion will host a Veterans Day service at the Anderson Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Jeff Bell, a member of the Swisher American Legion. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at Swisher American Legion hall. 


Morse soup supper Nov. 5

MORSE– The Morse Community Club (MCC) is holding its annual soup supper on Saturday  Nov. 5, from 5-8 p.m., with profits to be divided between the Solon and West Branch libraries. Last year the profit was given to the fire departments. The MCC is a non-profit organization that has been around for many years. There are three annual events held at the MCC. The pancake breakfast (usually held in March), the 3rd of July dance and the fall soup supper. The MCC is open to the public each Monday night (except holidays)  for 7:30 p.m. euchre.

“Winnie the Pooh” (2011, G, Animated) A new version of an old classic in which Eyeore has lost his tail, and Winnie the Pooh
“Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011, PG-13, Action/Sci Fi) After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals.


Babygarten continues

There are still a couple more sessions in the fall Babygarten program which ends on Nov. 16 and will resume again after the holidays. If you’ve been meaning to come with your little one, be sure and add us into your schedule for the next couple of weeks. Babygarten meets on Wednesdays from 9:30- 10:30 a.m. There is no registration. Children from newborn through 24 months and their caregivers may come to any or all sessions. The program includes approximately 20-25 minutes of rhymes and songs followed by 30 minutes of play time.


November storytimes

Storytime themes for November will be as follows. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, the theme will be all about farm animals; Nov. 15 will be trains; Nov. 22 will be food and on Nov. 29, chickens


Upcoming holiday events

• The Gingerbread House Workshop will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m. Sign up at the circulation desk at the library. Registration will be one gingerbread house per family to decorate with space available for 30 families. Registration will begin Oct. 18.


Book Club selection for November

The Book Club selection for November is “Any Bitter Thing” by Monica Wood. Raised by a Maine priest, her uncle Mike, since the age of two, Lizzy Mitchell grew up surrounded by his devotion to his ministry. By age nine, her world was shattered again when her uncle was accused of molestation. After being sent to live with relatives, Lizzy is told that Uncle Mike passed away from the weak family heart and died. Now a high-school counselor and trying to make sense of her life at age 30, Lizzy becomes a victim of a hit-and-run driver and is left, injured and stunned, in the middle of the median.


Early out Thursday

The next early out program will be Thursday, Nov. 3, with the showing of the movie “Rango” (rated PG). Movie time will be from 1:15-3:15 p.m. Fun and free early-out activities are for all Solon students. There is no registration. Children under the age of 10 attending the movie need to be picked up by parents or caregivers at 3:15 p.m.
