Dixie Ellison

Dixie Lee Ellison, 76, of Martelle, died Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Services were held Nov. 4 at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa where the Rev. John Keizer officiated. Interment was at Norwich Cemetery in Martelle.
Local survivors include her sister, Joan Weber of Solon.


Rachel Duncalf

Rachel Mae Duncalf, 93, Van Horne, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center, Keystone, where she had been a resident since March. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Van Horne with Father Brian Dellaert as celebrant. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery near Keystone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Friends of the Van Horne Library.
Rachel was born Sept. 21, 1918, at Van Horne, to Clifford O. and Hazel Blanche (Mayhew) Stewart and graduated from the Van Horne High School.


Emily Cornelis

Emily Mae Cornelis, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a brief illness. Services were held Nov. 7 at Hrabak Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Johnson. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Local survivors include a daughter, Janice (Jim) Hinschberger of Solon.
Memorials may be directed to the Belle Plaine Area Ambulance. Condolences may be left at www.hrabakfuneralhome.com under obituaries.

Writing about my old Solon apartment has me reminiscing about Spike, the 130-pound Rottweiler Sabra had when I first met her in the mid-1990s.


Food For Thought

Eight years after the Nov. 11, 1918, signing of the armistice that ended the fighting in Europe after the first World War, Armistice Day became an official national holiday. Its intention was to honor the veterans of that war, as well as those who had lost their lives in what was then known as the Great War. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to include the veterans of World War II and Korea, Today, we honor, officially or unofficially, the veterans of all wars and military conflicts.

North Liberty library offers Veterans Day movie screening

NORTH LIBERTY–In honor of Veterans Day, the North Liberty community library will show the movie “Patton” on Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. Contact Laura or Elaine at 626-5701 with questions.
The family movie “Cars2” will also be shown at 6 p.m. on Veterans Day.
