Holiday closing

The library will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Normal summer library hours will resume on Tuesday, July 5, at 10 a.m.


Summer reading continues

“The library is a whirl of activity with summer reading program in high gear,” admitted a breathless Jen Leveck, Youth Services Librarian. “There have been several days of over 600 items checked out and last week we checked out over 675 items on Tuesday.” The Storytime participants continue to enjoy the story and craft on Tuesday mornings. Thirty-eight teens gathered in the meeting room for the henna project on Tuesday @ 2.

Recently added to the library’s DVD collection:
“Biutiful” (2010, R) Javier Bardem starts as Uxbal, a man living in this world, but able to see his death, which guides his every move.  The film was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category in the 2010 Academy Awards, and Bardem also was nominated for his acting performance.
“Red Riding Hood” (2011, PG13) a fantasy/horror/mystery set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf; a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.


New adult titles

Fans of Janet Evanovich’s series of novels featuring bounty hunter Stephanie Plum won’t have to wait long to read the latest installment, “Smokin’ Seventeen.”  There are multiple copies and they’re circulating quickly. Call to reserve your copy, or place a hold through the website; a copy should be available soon.


Floating Through History program at Sugar Bottom July 2 spotlights Iowa’s waterways

IOWA CITY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Coralville Lake has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host a presentation called “Floating Through History” by Larry Stone at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, at the Sugar Bottom Campground Amphitheatre. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities.


Moo-Cow-Angelo spoofs Sistine Chapel masterpiece

SOLON– Doug and Lori Lindner selected freelance artist Deda Happel’s “Moo-Cow-Angelo” to decorate the calf the Solon Economist is sponsoring for the Solon Library Foundation’s Calf Classic. Deda’s creation is a colorful and delightful spoof of a Michelangelo rendition of the Creation painted on the Sistine Chapel.


Solon night at the Kernels July 2

CEDAR RAPIDS– Saturday, July 2, will be Solon night at the Cedar Rapids Kernels. This is an annual tradition and it’s a great opportunity for members of the Solon community to gather and support the Cedar Rapids Kernels while enjoying a great night at the ballpark. Solon community members can be involved in on-field contests, pre-game parade of teams, and presentation of the American flag during the national anthem. Plus there will be fireworks after the game! The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the activities begin at 6:35 p.m.


Fourth of July at Lake Macbride

SOLON– Sailors get out the streamers and float your boat on July 4 at 4 p.m. in the Lake Macbride boat parade.  Decorate your boat and line up at causeway at 4 p.m. on July 4.

July 4 sale at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– There will be a kolache, antique and collectible sale Monday, July 4, at Our Lord’s Church in Solon. Sale hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are also three spaces available for rent. Two are 20’ x 25’ and the other is 12’ x 25’. Call 319-841-2243 to rent a spot or for more information.


Putting down roots, giving them wings

ELY– Many drivers along Ely road have recently been treated to an uncommon sight.
Two trumpeter swans have made the wetland pond just south of Ely their new home for the summer.
And perhaps, if all goes as planned, forever.
The male and female pair was released on May 18 as part of an Iowa Department of Natural Resource (DNR) program to repopulate trumpeter swans in Iowa. Prior to the settlement of Iowa, the bird was common in the state until the 1930s, when the swan population began to diminish. Since 1993 the DNR has been working to repopulate Iowa with trumpeter swans.
