Riverside Theatre announces Sept. 15 deadline

IOWA CITY– Riverside Theatre invites playwrights to submit monologues for performance in “Walking the Wire.” This annual celebration of original work features monologues of 10 minutes or less by both established and up-and-coming playwrights. The focus for this season’s monologues is, “This Will Never Work.” Submissions must be emailed as a Word document and dated by midnight CST Sept. 15; final selections will be announced on Riverside Theatre’s website, www.riversidetheatre.org, on Nov. 1. The monologues will be performed March 2-11, 2012 at Riverside Theatre.


Rural telecom providers band together against national broadband plan

NORTH LIBERTY- Rural Iowa telecom providers have joined forces to raise awareness about a Federal Communications Commission plan they say will hurt rural broadband service.
The Iowa Telecommunications Company Coalition, made up of the Iowa Telecommunications Association, Iowa Network Services, and the Rural Iowa Independent Telephone Association, set up a website, www.thegreatdisconnect.org, to educate telecom customers about the plan.


North Liberty official recognized for volunteerism

NORTH LIBERTY– Volunteers at Van Allen Elementary school donate a valuable gift: their help.
The school is undoubtedly run by teachers and other official staff members, but volunteers– those Parent Teacher Organization members, retired teachers and university students who give freely of their time and talents– also help with operation, said former Principal Carmen Dixon.


Reasonable force: Understanding NLPD’s ‘Use of Force’ policy

NORTH LIBERTY — When a law enforcement officer uses a Taser, gun, or nearly any level of force on a suspect, headlines and misconceptions often follow.
A July incident at an Iowa City Pancheros restaurant– during which two men were fighting and one was subdued with a police taser– was captured on a witness’ phone camera and uploaded to the Internet for all to view and submit comments.
And comment they did.
While such incidents may be sensationalized in the media and make for dramatic Internet entertainment, in reality, they are– fortunately– quite rare.


2012 seat wide open in House District 77

JOHNSON COUNTY- After state and federal districts were redrawn following the 2010 census, Iowa lost one congressional seat. Due to Iowa’s slow-growing population, the state went from five U.S. representatives to four in the 2012 election.
In the Second Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack has decided to move, after his home, and the rest of Linn County, were placed in the First Congressional District. Loebsack, a Democrat, will move from Mt. Vernon to Johnson County into the new Second Congressional District.


IC, CCA school board elections set

IOWA CITY– Eight candidates have filed to run for the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education.
For the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, five candidates have declared their intent to run.

JoCo law could pave way for wind farm.

IOWA CITY- Johnson County’s planning and zoning commissioners have put their faith in wind energy and unanimously passed an ordinance that was partly credited to PNE Wind Energy Greenfield Developer Keith Kurtz.
At a meeting Monday, Aug. 1, the Johnson County Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission considered newly developed regulations for wind energy facilities, a response to a proposed PNE wind farm east and south of Solon.


Knight Prairie hike at F.W. Kent Park August 11

OXFORD– The majority of the State of Iowa was once covered by tall grass prairies. Today, little remains of these magnificent ecosystems. The Johnson County Conservation Board is trying to change that by protecting remnant prairies and restoring some of the native vegetation that was found in the Iowa prairies, as well as restoring associated animal communities. Dave Wehde, Vegetation Specialist for the Johnson County Conservation Board and other staff will be on hand to lead an informative hike around the Knight Prairie at F.W. Kent Park.


Miracles in Motion August 13 tack sale benefit

SWISHER– Miracles in Motion is holding an equine tack and Breyer horse sale at the Swisher farm on Saturday, August 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. All proceeds benefit Miracles in Motion, a therapeutic horseback riding facility for people with disabilities. Miracles in Motion is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.


Solon Idol performs on the perfect night

SOLON– The night was perfect– the weather cooled down and every mom, dad, and grandparent was in attendance. The Solon Idol show was about to start... Rick Jedlicka had his list ready to host the evening’s events. The roadies, Colin Samek and Donny Bandy, had been setting up since 4:30 p.m. and it was time to start the show.
But... the show had a CD copy glitch and needed another CD player. So as in any small town productions, somebody ran home to get another CD player.
