Kirkwood: valued and valuable to Eastern Iowa

In a state famed for education and a city renowned for arts, literature and quality of life, I am grateful to live in Iowa City and to serve the University of Iowa. In many ways, our mission at this university is enriched and strengthened by a deep and broad partnership with another dynamic learning institution—Kirkwood Community College.

Clippers struggle against the Golden Hawks

WELLMAN — The second week of the regular season for varsity football ended with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers still looking for a win. Following a loss to Mount Pleasant the week before at home, the Clippers traveled to Wellman Friday (Sept. 2) to face the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie. The night did not go well for CCA, as the Hawks soared to a 38-13 win.

The best in Iowa, right here in the Corridor

SWISHER– It’s the best wine in the state of Iowa, and it’s grown right here in the Corridor.
Cedar Ridge Vineyard’s La Crescent wine took the top honor of “Best Iowa Grown Wine” at the 5th annual Mid-American Wine Competition, held July 8-10 in Ankeny. The contest involved 82 commercial wineries from 14 Midwestern states and over 530 entries. The La Crescent also won a gold medal as did Cedar Ridge’s Reserve and Edelweiss wines. The winery and distiller also brought home a gold medal for Best Series Label Design.

Turns out there is a place like home

NORTH LIBERTY– Leaving the place one calls home can be a difficult, even traumatic, transition at any age. For the elderly, making different living arrangements to accommodate changing physical and cognitive needs can also be bewildering.
Kelly Quigley, owner of Country View senior living alternative, understands those changing needs, and can help make the transition smoother and more comfortable.
Quigley opened Country View, located on the west side of North Liberty, at 1515 Penn St., in 2005.

Shaken, but still strong

CEDAR RAPIDS— The Iowa City West Women of Troy improved their 2011 record to 2-2 last Tuesday night, with a 3-1 victory over Cedar Rapids Xavier.
“We’re still a team in transition,” coach Kathy Bresnahan said, referring to the recent tragic loss of Caroline Found in an August moped accident. “My hat’s off to Kelley Fliehler.” Fliehler, a 5’9” junior who stepped up and took over Found’s spot as setter with 34 against the Saints. “She’s got big shoes to fill” Bresnahan added noting she “did a really nice job, she led the team.”

Big plays win the night

IOWA CITY — Big penalties and missed opportunities plagued the Iowa City West High Trojans Friday night at home against Dubuque Hempstead.
But big plays propelled the Trojans to a 41-17 MVC win.
Jeremy Morgan set the table early in the first quarter with an interception. Although his run was cut short by a Mustang, the Trojans were in position to score, and Colin Baker did just that with 10:07 remaining in the quarter. Alex Troester’s PAT kick was good, and West had an early 7-0 lead.

Later than sooner

SUTLIFF– Those wanting to see the historic, flood-damaged Sutliff Bridge rebuilt and repaired will have to wait a little longer.
“We are several months behind on the completion of the final plans,” said Andy Johnson, Executive Assistant to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. VJ Engineering has sent the final plans to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO). Both agencies have to review and approve the plans before the project can move forward.
