School Pictures Friday Sept. 23

Individual school pictures will be taken at the later date of Friday, Sept. 23, by Lifetouch Photography.  Several package options are available through a prepayment-money back guaranteed plan.  Complete information will be distributed. All checks must be made payable to Lifetouch Photography.


School Registration OVERDUE

If you have not registered your children for school this fall, please complete the process immediately. All families are to use the E-Registration. Please contact the school if you need your students’ Access IDs and Passwords and RevTrak ID for payment. Families who have not paid the school fees must contact the central office, 624-3401 ext. 1349, to set up a payment plan. Failure to do so may result in the account being turned over to small claims court.

Course has meaning for Ashton

IOWA CITY– The Sept. 13 race had a little extra significance for Solon senior Abby Ashton. It was on the Ashton Cross Country Course at the University of Iowa. Brothers and 1960s Iowa runners Bill and Jim Ashton provided the lead gift for development of the course. “Bill is my Grandpa. Jim is my great-uncle, ”smiled Abby, when asked about the connection. She was also smiling because she was in the varsity mix this season; running fifth, sixth or seventh so far; realizing she has very good junior varsity runners pushing her for the spot.


Boys, girls run second at Regina Bob Brown Invitational

IOWA CITY– With a slimmed down field, Solon’s boys and girls were second at the rescheduled Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet. Team results showed up pretty much the same, with Kennedy of Cedar Rapids, Solon and host Regina of Iowa City finishing 1-2-3 after the boys and girls races.

Storytime theme

There are lots of dinosaurs that live in the library on top of book shelves and in the basement. Sometimes the dinosaurs visit schools. Many of the dinosaurs were on the lawn during the library birthday party. The Solon Public Library has many books about dinosaurs. The Storytime theme for Tuesday, Sept. 27, will be dinosaurs. Storytime is open to ages 2 to 5 years old, their caregivers and siblings. Storytime meets every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the big meeting room of the library.


Fall Babygarten begins

Babygarten will be resuming this fall on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with a new format. There will no longer be registration. Children from newborn through 24 months and their caregivers may come to any or all sessions which will meet through Nov. 16. The program includes approximately 20–25 minutes of rhymes and songs followed by 30 minutes of play time. This program is specifically designed for one-on-one involvement between parent and child but an extra sibling is welcome occasionally.


Library Board vacancies

There will be vacancies on the Library Board at the beginning of 2012. Openings will include terms for two adult positions residing within the Solon city limits and one adult position representing the rural Solon area. Positions are volunteer, four-year terms appointed by the mayor. Library board meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m.


Check out a puzzle

Before the holiday schedule bogs you down, check out a puzzle and enjoy a few cool evenings around the table putting together a jigsaw puzzle. All the puzzles in the library collection have been donated. There are several 300-piece puzzles with easy-to-grip pieces which have proved to be popular. If you have one that you no longer want, consider donating it to the library collection. Or, if you’d like to try one, be sure to come and check one out.
