Jimmy Burkhart

Jimmy “JJ” Burkhart, 64, found peace Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, following a valiant fight with cancer.
Funeral Services were held Oct. 11 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with the Rev. Mike Nelson officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Jimmy was born May 27, 1948, in Niles, Mich., the son of Robert and Opal Kauffman Burkhart. He was a 1966 graduate of City High School. Following a 19-year engagement, he married Barb “Bubba” Lee on Dec. 24, 1996, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

On the seventh day it rained.
Until then, showers were predicted every day but nary a drop fell. This day was forecast to be dry and it sprinkled off and on most of the morning– so much for meteorology.
From Brunswick we cycled 20 miles to White’s Ferry. Because of the drizzle we made fewer picture stops than usual and arrived before noon.

“Oh, you had an Aunt Agnes too?” my friend exclaimed. “Didn’t everybody?” I said. Whether or not her name was Agnes doesn’t matter. She was the aunt you remember most vividly. The one who always remembered your birthday. The two of you shared something special– most likely a birthday, middle name, or red hair.
