To state: Girls look for great finish

ANAMOSA– The setting is similar, as Solon takes aim at the 2012 Girls Cross Country State Meet Saturday at Fort Dodge. The team leader board is juggled a little, over last year’s team and individual finishes. However, a veteran Spartan lineup knows what to do; to improve on last year’s– and 2010’s– fourth place finish.
And they remember that only the top three teams are invited out on the deck overlooking the crowd to receive their trophies.

SOLON– It was just what Solon needed going into the playoffs.
The Spartan varsity football team ran a continuous clock for a quick finish against visiting Benton Community, 63-0, to cap off the regular season Friday evening.


Solon boys miss cut for state cross country

ANAMOSA– For Solon’s Patrick McGill, it was a matter of a couple steps.
At the Oct. 18 district cross country meet, five runners already had finished. Only the first 10 automatically qualify for the state meet. Heading into the finish line chute, McGill was knotted up in a group of six, fighting for the next five spots. “It was close over the last 800 (meters). I passed him (Jack Murray of Clear Creek-Amana) about 30 feet before he passed me,” recalled McGill minutes after the race. “We were neck and neck. It was a pretty solid race.”

1105 Project celebrates with groundbreaking

IOWA CITY– Four nonprofit organizations came together this month to celebrate a very welcomed gift.
In September, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors agreed to sell its former Public Health building for $1 to the Crisis Center of Johnson County. Space in the 7,300 square foot building will be used to supplement the Crisis Center’s current location next door, and the rest will be leased to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) of Johnson County and Iowa City’s Free Lunch Program.


Costume party Monday night

The library’s annual Halloween Costume Party will be Monday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Children should come in costume for an hour of food, games, crafts, and indoor trick-or-treating If you can’t get there right at 6:30 p.m. or need to leave early, that’s not a problem– the event is more of an open house structure, where kids can go to just some or all of the activity stations. There is no charge for this event.

SOLON– Do you want to get the word out that you have a business? Solon Economic Development Group (SEDG) can help. SEDG has two advertising boards, one at Dairy Queen and the other at the Solon Public Library. The ad boards hold business cards to get the word out of your services. If you’re a Solon Economic Development Group registered member you may advertise free for six months, and have a digital image of your card on the photo display. Membership fees are $25 for a year. Swisher Legion Auxiliary hosts Homemade Turkey Supper Nov. 3

SWISHER– The Swisher Auxiliary will host a Homemade Turkey Supper Saturday, Nov. 3, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion.
The public is invited. The cost of $9 for adults, and $5 for children ages 6-12. Children age 5 and under eat free.
Proceeds will be donated to English Rivers Outfitters to help veterans.
Turkey Bingo by Swisher Junior Auxiliary will run from 4:30-7:30 p.m.


Post Prom outlet sale scheduled for Nov. 3

SOLON– Solon’s Post Prom Party committee will be holding a Solon Outlet Sale of used clothing and sporting goods at the Solon Middle School commons Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9-11 a.m.
Please donate any used Solon Spartan apparel as well as any sporting equipment such as cleats, gloves, athletic apparel, etc. Please make sure donations are clean and in good condition. Donations can be dropped off at any of the three schools in labeled boxes and will be collected Oct. 1 through 19. All proceeds for this fundraiser will be used for the 2013 Post Prom Party.
