Walkin'

Before moving on from Shepherdstown in this travelogue, I should note a couple more things that happened while in this lovely West Virginia city.
From talking with fellow cyclists, we learned something about the official detour mentioned in an earlier column. They had taken it the year before, and one of them crashed, breaking a collarbone. Score one for scofflaws.
More importantly, Sabra got to do laundry.


Food For Thought

It was quite a long time ago that I interviewed Clary Illian, a potter in Ely, for this newspaper. If I’m not mistaken, she hadn’t had her shop in downtown Ely for very long at the time, and when Brian, then editor, sent me off to interview her, I had never heard of her or seen any of her work. I was greatly impressed and wrote a lengthy, glowing article about her impressive array of mugs, bowls, pitchers and platters. In fact, some of what I wrote had to be cut because I had far too much to say for the allotted space in the paper.


Miracles in Motion 5k challenge Oct. 28

MARION– Please join Miracles in Motion Therapeutic Equestrian Center at their annual fundraiser on Oct. 28. This fun run/walk/wheel event will be held at Squaw Creek Park in Marion. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Red Cedar Lodge and racing begins at 9 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded for the fastest male and female runners. There will also be a costume contest. Registration is $25 and $10 for children (age 10 and under).

CCA’s Facilities Study Committee organizes

OXFORD– Determining the next, best thing for students? That’s a task for the members of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district’s Facilities Study Committee. Around 25 committee members, faculty and staff met Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the elementary school in Oxford for an organizational meeting.
The district is continuing to face increased enrollment and a resulting lack of space, leading to the potential need to expand existing facilities or even build new. The board approved a committee to explore the district’s needs and make recommendations to address them.

Clipper cross country JV boys and varsity girls blow past competition

IOWA CITY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross country teams gathered at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course with a few hundred of their closest friends and rivals for the Clippers’ home meet last Monday evening.
Middle School, junior varsity (JV) and varsity teams ran the course under mostly clear skies and seasonal temperatures.


Under a Cider Moon: a time for celebration and fun

JOHNSON COUNTY– Join the fun and celebration at the Johnson County Heritage Trust’s (JCHT) annual fundraiser, “Under a Cider Moon … A Celebration of Autumn,” on Friday, Oct. 19, at Schwab’s Celebration Barn, 245th St., NE (off Sugar Bottom Road), Solon.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a drawing for a diamond pendant, valued at $500, will be held at 6 p.m. Must be present to win. The live auction begins promptly at 7 p.m.


West JV fourth at City High

IOWA CITY– The West High JV volleyball team placed fourth at the 2012 City High JV Little Hawk Tournament held Monday, Sept. 24.
Cedar Rapids Xavier won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record; City High was second with a 3-1 showing. Solon placed third with a 2-2 record, the Women of Troy’s placing came with a 1-3 record while Cedar Rapids Kennedy was fifth with an 0-4 record.
Round One:
City High def. CR Kennedy 21-1, 21-8.
CR Xavier def. IC West 21-13, 21-16.
Round Two:
City High def. IC West 17-21, 21-13, 15-9.
Solon def. CR Kennedy 21-9, 21-12.

CCA Homecoming sullied by the Sabers

TIFFIN– The 2012 Homecoming for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers was tarnished Friday night as visiting Central DeWitt had its way with the guys in blue, winning 30-14 and dropping CCA to a 3-3 record overall.


2012 ‘See You at the Pole’ in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Heritage Christian School students participated in the national “See You at the Pole” event Tuesday Sept. 25, the day before thousands of other students from around the country will gather to pray around their schools’ flagpoles. As one would expect at a Christian school, students at Heritage have heavily participated in the national event in past years. Christian students who attend the area’s public junior highs, however, have sometimes been reluctant to participate because of fear of being singled out or intimidated by the lack of numbers around their flagpoles.


Stone Soup Supper Oct. 28 will benefit NL Pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will hold its fourth annual Stone Supper on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the South Slope Community Room in North Liberty. All community members are invited. Cost is $10 for adults (13 and up) and $5 for children (12 and under). Dinner includes soup, salad, bread, dessert and drink. A silent auction will be held from 5 until 6:45 pm. The North Liberty Community Pantry was founded on the belief that we are neighbors helping neighbors. Please help your neighbors and support the Stone Soup Supper.
