Iowa Highway Patrol releases details of Jan. 30 fatality on Ely Road

SOLON– The Iowa State Patrol has released its report on the Jan. 30 accident that claimed the life of a rural Solon man and his young son.
Gregory Engrav, 37, of rural Solon was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Impala south on Ely Road near the intersection with 140th Street at 7:57 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, when his vehicle drifted into the northbound lane, side-swiping a 1998 Subaru Outback driven by Steve Thompson of Solon, and then colliding head-on with a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Melissa Bachus of Solon.

Garden Club presentation Feb. 13 at the library

SOLON– Please join the Solon Garden Club for a presentation on “Color in the Garden.” Dorothy Fowles is a Johnson County master gardener who has years of experience in developing small colorful gardens. As a professor in the College of Design at Iowa State University, Dr. Fowles taught a range of design courses over many years. She will be sharing information on how to use color to add visual impact and creating an artful garden design.

Tai Chi class begins Feb. 23

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department is offering a day-time Tai Chi class for adults, specifically designed for seniors. The six-week class will be held beginning Feb. 23 on Thursdays from 11 until 11:45 a.m. at the Solon Public Library. The class will emphasize improving balance and coordination. This is a relaxing class with gentle exercises appropriate for all ages. Tai Chi is a soft martial art that focuses on body awareness, coordination, balance and control of movement. The class will consist of deep breathing exercises, a seated warm up and some standing exercises.

Sign-up for Saturday morning family fun fitness; class begins Feb. 18

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department is offering a “Family Fun” fitness class for children ages two through pre-kindergarten. This is a parent/child participation class designed to keep you moving and to get active while having fun together. The five-week class will be held on Saturday mornings from 10:20 until 11:15 a.m. at the Lakeview Elementary gym beginning Feb. 18. A child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the entire one-hour session. 

City might give food pantry a site

SOLON– The city council members don’t want to store food for a proposed pantry in the library’s basement, but they may agree to something more critical to the project: a location.
In a packed meeting last Wednesday (Feb. 1), the Solon City Council and organizers for a Solon food pantry came together again to discuss a request to temporarily store non-perishable food in the basement of the Solon Public Library. Organizers were seeking a site to stockpile items in anticipation of the pantry’s proposed June opening.

Solon council member proposes burn ban

SOLON– “I don’t know if that’s going to be tomorrow or five years or 10 years, but society is moving toward not allowing burning in city limits,” Mayor Cami Rasmussen said. “It’s coming– that day is going to come.”
And it may come soon.
Council member Brad Kunkel thinks the time has come to prohibit open burning in the city of Solon.
At last week’s Solon City Council meeting, Kunkel requested the city consider a burn ban, and the subject will be further discussed at a Feb. 15 meeting.

The little store with a big heart

SHUEYVILLE— She calls it “the little store with a big heart.” Gail Boothe, owner of Space Doctors Interiors has packed her tiny shop from front to back with a wide variety of home décor items.
Boothe said she has spent her whole life making people happy with their living spaces. In high school she started painting and applying wall coverings. As an adult, she bought older homes and renovated and remodeled them.

SUMC Men’s Group hosts soup supper to benefit Habitat house

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Men’s group will be serving the community in more ways than one this month.
The group’s annual soup supper has always been a fundraiser to benefit the church, but this year, proceeds will be collected as free will donations rather than through ticket sales, and donated to the Habitat for Humanity project currently underway in Solon.

Blood drive Feb. 18

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Auxiliary and the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will be hosting a blood drive Saturday, Feb. 18, from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center. To donate, contact Jean Stinocher at 319-624-2356.

Vets memorial breakfast Feb. 19

The Solon American Legion will host a Veterans Memorial Breakfast Sunday, Feb. 19, from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice coffee or milk. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children age six through 12. Kids age five and under eat free. Proceeds go to the Solon Veterans’ Memorial maintenance and landscaping fund.
