Multifamily homes still multiplying

NORTH LIBERTY– Is there too much multifamily housing in North Liberty?
City council members have posed that question periodically since 2007, even passing and then repealing a moratorium on multifamily housing site plans that year.
But the apparent answer continues to be “No.”
Home buyers are still demanding it, developers are still asking to build it, and neighbors and city leaders are continuing to accept it.

NORTH LIBERTY — What’s a dog to do?
Kitty (officially Kitty Butters Fine-Timmel) wants to run, jump and play outside without the encumbrance and restriction of a leash. But the City of North Liberty doesn’t have a place for Kitty and his dog friends to do so.
“At large means a dog which is physically off the premises of the owner, handler, or custodian of the dog, and which is not secured by a leash which is under the control of the owner, handler, or custodian not exceeding ten feet in length,” says the city code.


Traffic Safety Coalition announces traffic fatalities in Iowa on the decline

CHICAGO, Ill.– The latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show the number of fatalities on Iowa’s roadways declined 11 percent, including a 28 percent reduction in pedestrian fatalities, from 2006 to 2010. Iowa roads are getting safer with increased seat belt usage, improved air bag technology, safer driving habits and local police departments taking advantage of new technology to hold lawbreakers accountable through the use of live-saving enforcement tools such as red light cameras.


Mascher proposes legislation based on JECC issues

DES MOINES– Call it a good idea gone awry.
When the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC) was conceived, the concept was simple: consolidate the various public safety (fire, EMS and law enforcement) dispatchers in Johnson County in one combined dispatch center.


New faces in Solon girl’s soccer lineup

SOLON– Solon girls soccer coach John Tucker has a few new faces in the line up this year with the loss of several key players at graduation last year. Ali Herdliska and Emily Ament have joined Alison McKinnie, Brianna Pike and Jackie Meyer as forwards. Midfielders Abby Haas, Anna Seydel and Mattie Cook have been joined by Madi Durr, Candice Kucera and Marie Maston. Carissa Siddell and Vic Meade have been added to the backline to help out Katherine Carr, Allie Mercer and Katie Silberstein. Mikaela Lighty will be tending the goal this year.


Pair of seconds for Lady Spartans

TIFFIN– Heading into the last event, it was a long shot. To pull out a championship in the April 5 Creek Track and Field Classic, Solon’s girls would have to finish three or more places better than host Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in the 4x400 relay. CCA erased the question mark, though, with a nine-second win over the Spartans, who held on for third in the event and runner-up in the meet.


Boys running strong

The 2012 edition of Solon boys’ track is off to an impressive start in the first meets of the outdoor season. This year’s team is one of the largest and youngest in Solon history with 52 members, including 38 freshmen and sophomores.


Summer driver ed parent meeting April 19

There will be a driver education parent meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9, in the middle school auditorium. This will be an opportunity for the driver education instructors to briefly explain the summer program and to answer questions you may have about the summer program. We understand that getting your child to and from both class and driving times can be challenging during the summer. With this in mind, they encourage you to talk with each other at the conclusion of this meeting to arrange transportation during the summer to and from class and driving times.


Coe College honor bands

This year 38 fifth through eighth grade band students were accepted to the Coe College elementary, junior or senior high honor band which will take place on Saturday, April 21, for the elementary honor band and Sunday, April 22, for the junior and senior high honor bands at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Students will be preparing five or six pieces of music that they will rehearse and perform with students from other schools accepted to the honor band with the well known composer Larry Neek as one of the guest conductors. Tickets may be purchased at the door for these concerts.
