Theodore Rittenmeyer

Theodore “Ted” Rittenmeyer, 83, of 1095 Silvercrest Circle, Iowa City, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at the Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City after a courageous battle with dementia.
Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Ted was born on July 24, 1928, in Iowa City “Goosetown,” the son of Albert P. and Bess L. (Fitch) Rittenmeyer. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1947. Ted was joined in wedlock to Marjory M. Crock on December 22, 1948. She preceded him in death.

Midday Connection luncheon Jan. 11

IOWA CITY– The January Midday Connection luncheon event will be held at the University Club, 1360 Melrose Ave., Iowa City, on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at noon. Cost is $15.
“Let’s Piece It Together” is the luncheon theme, which features Peg Griffin-Wood, owner of Common Threads in North Liberty. Griffin-Wood will display old and new sewing machines, fabrics and different ways of quilting.
Doug Peters, of Iowa City, will provide music. Peters is a gifted tenor and composer who accompanies himself on guitar.


Tiffin Fire Association to hold annual meeting Jan. 16

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Fire Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan.16. The meeting will be held at the Tiffin fire station starting at 6:30 p.m. and includs the appointment of directors. This meeting will be followed immediately by the regular meeting, which includes election of officers.


Babe Ruth league early registration begins Jan. 14

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Babe Ruth League will be accepting early registration for the 2012 season starting Jan. 14 at Diamond Dreams in Coralville. Registration is open to residents of North Liberty, Coralville and the surrounding communities. Early registration will be from Jan. 14 through Feb. 18, at a cost of $130. Final registration is Feb.19 through March 23, at a cost of $150. Registration fee includes full uniform (hat, jersey, pants, sox, belt) league fees and insurance.


County to consider special events permit

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Department (P&Z) has written new code for landowners hosting special events. Up to 12 temporary outdoor activities, like music festivals, theatrical exhibitions, speeches or other entertainment, will be allowed per calendar year on properties zoned Agricultural, Residential, and split Ag/Residential.
The new permitting process places burden on the applicant to publish their schedule before receiving a Multiple Special Events permit.

IOWA CITY— Gary Albrecht was in the hot seat. As the Executive Director for the Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC), it was his task to bring forth a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Albrecht made his presentation Monday afternoon, Dec. 19, during a supervisors’ budget work session, and found himself having to account for some of the accounting.

NORTH LIBERTY– When does a gas station not resemble a gas station?
When it sits in the heart of North Liberty, apparently.
At their Dec. 27 meeting, the North Liberty City Council spent more than an hour debating the appearance of a proposed new Casey’s convenience store.


Third grade vocal concert

The third graders have been working hard to prepare a concert showing their ability to sing, read and play the notes in a round. Please join us on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 6:30 p.m., in the middle school auditorium to hear their hard work performed. Students have been practicing beginning harmony with their voices and instruments. They will be singing and playing several instruments.

HS jazz dinner concert

Tickets are going on sale for the Solon High School jazz dinner concert to be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at St Mary’s Church in Solon. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 6 p.m. Tickets are $17 and must be purchased in advance. Admission includes a catered dinner by Ruzicka’s Catering of Solon and a live jazz concert featuring the four Solon Jazz Choirs: “Premier”, “Mainstream”, “Blame It On Our Youth” and “Fifth Street Jazz”. Individual members will also be performing throughout the night along with live solo jazz music during the dinner portion of the event.


School board meeting Jan. 9
