Supervisors skeptical about social host ordinance

By Chris Umscheid
Solon Economist

IOWA CITY– They agree there is a problem with underage drinking and house parties or other gatherings where alcohol is consumed illegally. How to address it, however, is something the Johnson County Board of Supervisors isn’t sure about.

Hawk men and women win

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

Like I said earlier, I like this time of year because if the Hawkeye football team loses, like they did last Saturday at Kinnick, the men or women’s basketball team can bring winning back to the table.
Both teams won big... one was a good win… one not as good.
I’ll start with the women, who beat Concordia 92-68 Sunday at Carver.
Melissa Dixon hit two 3-pointers in the first 33 seconds and the Hawkeyes were off and running.

A bad loss

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

As good as last week’s 17-10 overtime win was against Northwestern, the 28-9 loss to Wisconsin was a bad one.
Missed opportunities, interceptions, breakdowns in the defensive backfield (again) and Jake Rudock getting hurt.
One of the nice things about this time of year is if the Hawkeye football team loses, I can watch men’s and women’s basketball, like I did last Sunday, and get that losing taste out of my mouth.
I haven’t done the good, the bad and the ugly this year so…
Starting with the good, how about Jordan Canzeri, the redshirt sophomore running back.

Real men make quiche

walkin'

I have been making quiche a lot lately since we added a coop, AKA Hen Hilton, complete with a half-dozen hens, to our house.
Fresh eggs should be on any list of proofs that there is a god, along with the complexity of DNA, the vastness of our universe, the color of autumn and crisp bacon.
Think about it.

A thousand and one uses for pumpkins

Food for Thought

Don’t worry, I’m not going to actually list that many ways to use pumpkins. There may not be that many– on the other hand, there may be considerably more, but I fall asleep about time my list gets up into the late teens. This time of year, when supermarket parking lots are overflowing with those big orange orbs and all their pink, white, green, red and brown cousins, and every farmers’ market and farmer’s child has a sign out front advertising bargain prices for them, I wonder just what happens to all of them, once Halloween and Thanksgiving are over and forgotten.
