Legion Veterans Memorial breakfast Feb. 17

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will be offering its Veterans Memorial special breakfast at the legion on Sunday, Feb. 17, from 7 until 11:30 a.m. For $7 adults and $4 children (ages six through 12) they will be serving all you can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk. Children five and under eat free.
All proceeds go to maintenance costs at the Veteran’s Memorial monument.

West splits with City on the hardwood

IOWA CITY– The West High varsity boys basketball team posted its 44th consecutive win Tuesday night with a 67-34 pounding of their rival, the Little Hawks, at City High.
The Trojans jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first period and were up 36-14 at the half.
Three Trojans, Jeremy Morgan, Wyatt Lohaus and Austin Swank were in double-digits with 19 points for Morgan while Swank had 14 and Lohaus contributed 13 to the cause. Jason Stewart had an 8-point game, Myzeah Batie-Gaddy scored 6, Chike Ukah had 4 and David Dileo put in 3. Morgan sank a trio of 3-pointers as well.

Connor Murphy was the only Clear Creek Amana Clipper to advance to a Class 2A District Wrestling Tournament held Saturday, Feb. 9, at Solon High School. The sophomore placed fourth, falling to Wehage in 5:07, and to Jaret Probasco of South Tama in the Third Place match in 1:55.

Dowling derails Trojan grapplers’ run for State Dual Meet

IOWA CITY– Two “firsts” occurred Wednesday night in the West High gymnasium.
One, the Trojans won’t be going to the state dual meet in Des Moines for the first time in a decade.
The other, the West Des Moines Dowling Maroons will be going for the first time since 1993. The Maroons bested West by one point, winning a Class 3A Regional Dual Meet, 35-34.

Conservation group puts the emphasis on local wetlands

SHUEYVILLE– Since 1911, Delta Waterfowl has been committed to preserving the future of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting. For a year now, the Hoosier Bay Chapter has been organizing and making plans for the future of local waterfowl and hunting, specifically in their namesake Hoosier Bay, located south of Ely in the Atherton Wetland.
The group with around 30 members is headquartered in Shueyville and covers a 50-mile radius.

City releases “mutual statement” on police chief’s sudden resignation

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty City Attorney Scott Peterson released the following Wednesday, Feb. 6, regarding the departure of North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin.
“Jim Warkentin has tendered his resignation as chief of police effective Feb. 1. The city council will consider Jim’s resignation at its next meeting. The City of North Liberty would like to thank Jim for his service to the community and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Revenues repurposed with district-wide vote

Passage means accelerated revenues, tight timeline for construction

IOWA CITY– The Yes votes were out in force for the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) revenue purpose statement (RPS) vote on Feb. 5, easily passing the language written to inject some cash into school facilities in a district-wide vote.
Superintendent Stephen Murley sounded ready to go to work when results of the revenue purpose statement vote were announced at the school board meeting.
“We have a tight timeline,” he said, for working out construction projects before the start of the building season.

ICCSD diversity policy sets stage for redrawn district

IOWA CITY– Students who receive free and reduced lunch will be redistributed across the Iowa City school district, according to a new diversity policy passed after its third reading at a Feb. 5 Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) school board meeting. The plan is to also check high school capacity and will set another trigger for building a secondary school.
The policy will guide the district in its bid toward equity in the schools.

JECC presents county with 11.3 percent increase

Radio system maintenance boosts center’s bottom line

IOWA CITY– Maintenance contracts have pushed the FY 2014 Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC) budget request up about $356,000, an increase of 11.3 percent over last year.
JECC director Tom Jones said he had a “pretty level budget, but for one item,” the estimated contract for upkeep on the facility’s Harris radio system. When the center first opened, three-year maintenance contracts for the E911 center were pre-negotiated to September, but the cost will now be budgeted annually.
