Floyd Meyer

Floyd Henry Meyer, 91, originally of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2013, at Sunshine Villa in Santa Cruz, Calif. Floyd was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Cedar Rapids to Emma and Harry Meyer.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Coe College with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and then received his master’s degree in engineering from the University of Iowa. He served as a professor at the University of Iowa Engineering School for 30 years. He also taught at Kirkwood Community College.

Randy Heinle

Randy Heinle, 54, of North Liberty, formerly of Hills, died suddenly Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Randy’s life was celebrated with words, thoughts and memories by family and friends on July 22 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Coranel Frieden

Coranel (Rothlisberger) Frieden, 95, of Elgin, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Center in Waverly.
She was born Jan. 1, 1918, to Walter Simon and Jessie Nell (Probert) Rothlisberger in Illyria Township, Fayette County. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1934 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1936.
Coranel was united in marriage with Floyd Joseph Frieden on Sept. 4, 1939, in the stone house in Illryria Township. Five children were born to this union. Coranel was a homemaker and a substitute teacher, and helped on the farm.

Calvin D. Freese

Calvin D. Freese, 68, of Solon, died Thursday, July 18, 2013. A time for friends and family to gather will be from 3-4 p.m., Saturday, July 27, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Memorials can be made to the Calvin Freese Memorial Fund. Solon settles for sixth place at 4A softball tournament

Lady Spartans defeat Waverly-Shell Rock

SOLON– The Lady Spartans finished the 4A state softball tournament with a 1-2 record Wednesday, good for sixth place.
Solon defeated Waverly-Shell Rock 10-0 in five innings Wednesday in the consolation final, then fell to Winterset 7-4 in the consolation final Wednesday evening.
The Lady Spartans ended up in the consolation bracket after a 6-1 upset Tuesday at the hands of Washington.
The girls rebounded against Waverly-Shell Rock, scoring five runs in each of the first two innings. The first inning featured doubles by Taylor Nearad and Kara Misel, and a two-run home run by Riley Ogden.
